I've seen this article before also. There was some debate about whether the writer was being serious or facetious in mimicking others who've called A-Rod out (last winter's Red Sox players, now it's Ozzie Guillen, etc).

If only you were around when last season Jeter made countless game-ending groundouts and flyouts.

He's good, but he's had his share of moments when we needed to score a guy from 2B to tie the game, but he either whiffed or GIDP'd.

People seem to think that Yankee fans give Jeter and Torre sainthood, like they can walk on water. I'd say that's far from the truth.

BTW, perhaps I'm being snooty, but since this guy writes for Maxim, which is a men's magazine featuring scantily-clad women and female sportscasters, I'm not too sure how good he really is. If it were SI, ESPN, foxsports, etc, I'd be more interested.

Interesting writing is intersting writing. And sports is very much part of culture, which is why Maxim is not a bad place for this satirical piece. It doesn't belong with the so-called sports journalism leaders. If it were SI or ESPN, the writer would have included himself in the article a bit more.

Me, just give me your opinion and leave yourself out of it, unless it's ye ol' "yours truly" or "this reporter" when referring to oneself. If not, then the "there's no 'I' in the word team" obviously wouldn't apply to sportswriting.

I think Maxim and its ilk can get away with it more than SI because sports are not the focus of the magazine. A magazine trying to feature sports should not focus so much space on a singular issue like that. Not if it's a national audience.

I'll take it at that. I just get a bit touchy with Alex, since he's like a human magnet for pot shots his way. First the salary, then the scrutiny of his attitude, then his not making any crazy statements to rack up newspaper sales.

I'll re-read the piece, but sometimes I just wish the season would start so that Alex could start smackin' the ball again. That way, he could do what he's famous for.

I think no matter what A-Rod does, on the field and off, he can't win. I guess such is the territory with that ridiculous contract. I agree though, that he does seem to try to hard to project an image, like he wants to come across like Derek Jeter, and it just comes across as ingenuine.

Alex Rodriguez is one of the best ballplayers ever. He is, however, at this moment, not a winner. He is effective and talented at every part of the game, but he is nowhere near the winner who is the Yankee Shortstop. This has to be a burden on the two-time AL MVP. While Alex has batting titles and MVP's, Jeter has rings on his fingers.

At the sametime, I believe this can give Alex the room to be himself. He doesn't have to be the captain. He can be more daring, more intuitive. I think that the secret to A-Rod is not to get arrested for drunk driving. I get the joke, but the trick for Alex is to look to his left on the field and learn. He can also look to his left and then move on. I agree he needs to carve out his own identity on the team. I believe he will. I believe that there will be a moment somewhere this year or next when we all look like privileged fools for not realizing who we have at the hot corner. But we are spoiled New Yorkers and we have to push and demand and maintain the highest standards. That's what makes it so exciting in the Bronx.

I think 2006 will be a big step for Alex. I still like what he said about initially not playing in the WBC, that the only place he can do justice to both his american and dominican heritage is by playing for the New York Yankees. This sounded real to me. He should stick to his heart. I think he out-thinks himself and comes off fake. He should just be himself and then he will be much better for it. It will also make him a better player in clutch situations whether it's a day game in June or a crucial game against the Los Angeles Angels at the end of the season. It will make him a winner if he just acts on his own intuition rather than some re-thought rehearsal-type material conjured up for primetime. The point of the very funny article I think is exactly that. Alex should be more spontaneous rather than over-planned. I think this is the key to him being a winner rather than a talented consistent player. It will put him over the top. Natural talent needs to breathe.

Yeah A-Rod needs to be more like Jeter...he could start by cutting his offensive production in half!

A-Rod's only problem is that he tries to hard for people to like him. He panders to people because he wants to shield himself from the fair weather A-Rod fans who know that criticizing him is more in fashion than praising him. This is why I feel Guillen's commnent was right on the money.

A-Rod's the best player in the game, the highest paid player. He is a physical specimen and most of the women I know find him more attractive than Jeter. His work ethic is legendary. He's a perfect target for Joe Sportsfan, or Sportswriter to project their personal insecurities on. A-Rod has to recognize that between his gifts and salary he is always going to have the crosshairs on him, no matter how good he plays or how good of a person he actually is. A-Rod would benefit from no longer making a special effort to please people and just quietly be himself. The image the media has created of him, is more pervasive than the person he really is- simulacra!

So screw 'em Alex, these are the same people who will be asking, in 30 years, if you were the best ever!!
