It’s still being discussed in various hushed tones and far from a done deal, but a new, larger Tampa downtown site is emerging as the location of a potential Rays home.

With a plan to play part of the season in Montreal scrapped, the Tampa Bay Rays are reportedly shifting from a plan for a modest Ybor City facility to a larger, domed ballpark that will serve as year-round home for the MLB team. The Ybor City land once eyed for the modest ballpark isn’t a large enough site for a domed facility, however, leading the team to look elsewhere for the facility.

Emerging as a potential home: 25 acres of waterfront property between Ybor City and the Florida Aquarium, currently in the process of being sold to entrepreneur Darryl Shaw. For those following the various plans for a potential Rays home, the name should be familiar: he’s been working with the team on assembling parcels for a new Rays ballpark on two occasions. This 25-acre waterfront site has also been considered in the past for a new Rays ballpark as well.

If I'm not mistaken, the least qualified of the four finalists and the only one to not have a second interview as of yesterday.

Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright spoke with the media today, including Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat, on the heels of the announcement that he and the club had agreed to a contract for 2023. In discussing the deal, Wainwright admitted that 2023 will be his final season.

David Stearns is stepping down as the Brewers’ president of baseball operations but will remain with the club in an advisory capacity, the team announced. General manager Matt Arnold will now oversee the baseball operations department.

This was a surprise to me. Stearns is one of the better baseball ops heads in the business. The Hader trade may not have yielded immediate results - it wasn't designed to - but Hader's absence wasn't responsible for the team's post-deadline collapse. This smells more like a preemptive move towards the Mets for Stearns.

Katie Woo of The Athletic reports that superstar third baseman Nolan Arenado has informed the Cardinals he will be opting into the remainder of his contract. Arenado, who slashed .293/.358/.533 in a 2022 campaign that left him in line to receive consideration for the NL MVP award, will make $144 million over the next five years and lock up the hot corner in St. Louis through the end of the 2027 season.

Rob Manfred discussed a variety of topics in an interview with Chris Russo on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM yesterday, including the commissioner’s latest thoughts on the Athletics’ and Rays’ ongoing attempts to build new ballparks (and thus remaining in their current cities or markets). Since the Athletics’ lease at the RingCentral Coliseum is up after the 2024 season, there is more of a ticking clock to determine their fate, whether the result is the A’s staying in Oakland at the long-gestating Howard Terminal site, or perhaps moving to a new city altogether.

While some steps have been taken this year towards getting the Howard Terminal project off the ground, quite a number of logistical and financial hurdles remain, as outlined last month by Sarah Ravani of the San Francisco Chronicle. As a result, Manfred is “not positive” about the chances of the A’s staying put: “I think the mayor in Oakland has made a huge effort to try to get it done in Oakland. It just doesn’t look like it’s going to happen….Something has to happen. We can’t go five more years in the Coliseum.”

He's pushing hard for Vegas, no doubt. The MLB's vagabonds will almost certainly be moving somewhere after their lease is up.

The Kansas City Royals have hired Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro as their new manager, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports. This is the first Major League managerial job for Quatraro, who turns 49 years old in November. The Royals have officially announced the hiring, and MLB.com’s Anne Rogers reports that Quatraro received a three-year deal with a club option for the 2026 season.
