If he was 22 or even 25 and not proven to be injury prone then it might not be so bad. Do they really not realize that more than half the contract will most certainly be for a guy below replacement level or not playing at all? It's hard to believe the posters on a baseball forum know more about the way baseball players age than the teams do. I remember about ten years ago saying similar things when Pujols went to The Angels, and it worked out even worse for them than I had imagined.

If he was 25 he would have gotten $500 million.
      My top 10 players:

      1. Babe Ruth
      2. Barry Bonds
      3. Ty Cobb
      4. Ted Williams
      5. Willie Mays
      6. Alex Rodriguez
      7. Hank Aaron
      8. Honus Wagner
      9. Lou Gehrig
      10. Mickey Mantle

Yankees had to sign him at any cost and everyone knows it.
"No matter how great you were once upon a time — the years go by, and men forget,” - W. A. Phelon in Baseball Magazine in 1915. “Ross Barnes, forty years ago, was as great as Cobb or Wagner ever dared to be. Had scores been kept then as now, he would have seemed incomparably marvelous.”

Teams don't care. There will always be an owner who overpays because they can turn around and double parking and beer costs. Yes, the outcome of the Pujols deal was extremely predictable by the casual fan so they had to know it too. But they just don't care because there are no consequences for bad signings.
