I think that correlates with John Fisher's destruction of the A's brand. Giants have the Bay area locked up, so it wasn't as necessary to sign Correa, or anyone. No local competition.

Pocketing revenue, and not spending appropriately on payroll remains MLB owners' preferred strategy.
Fisher is a disgrace. He's been blessed with excellent management and hasn't invested in his team to push for multiple WS contenders. Will be interesting what happens with the ballpark and location situation.

Didn't the giants make very serious bids at Correa and judge? Can't really blame them on coming short
I now have my own non commercial blog about training for batspeed and power using my training experience in baseball and track and field.

The Giants have tried for years to sign a big time free agent. They offered Harper, Judge, and Correa huge contracts. They went all in in trying to sign Ohtani out of Japan. Giants management, including then manager Bruce Bochy and Buster Posey, flew to Japan to court Ohtani. But Ohtani didn't want to play the field so he signed with the Angels.

It wasn't for lack of trying. They alledgedly offered Judge even more than the Yankees did. And the deal with Correa was massive as well, before it fell apart due to medical issues (as is happening again with the Mets).

Sometimes, if your team isn't a desirable destination for free agents, you have to pay more than market value. Like when Werth signed with the Nationals. Padres seem to make highest offer, though it's not always accepted.

I think the Giants might have a more free handed approach to payroll, if the A's offered any local competition.

If neither Las Vegas or Oakland/SF give Fisher the kind of handout he wants, he'll have a choice... either move to LV, with a TV market about 1/3rd the size of SF and lose much TV revenue, or... Stay in Oakland, where you've decimated your own fan base.

And the Werth signing was a disaster. It's generally not a good idea to pay above market value for a player. There's a reason that no other team offered him that much money.

And the Giants did that once before with Barry Zito and that was an unmitigated disaster. The Giants signed Zito for seven year, $126 million contract and they got a 63-80 W-L, 4.62 ERA, 87 ERA+, 2.4 bWAR in return.
