  • Should Piazza retire?

Looking at his recent stats and injuries one would assume that retirement is the best choice for Mike Piazza at this time. But is he really washed up? I think that the key is playing in a home stadium that doesnt kill him. Piazza has always been much better on the road than at home, but in recent years he has been downright horrible at home, but damn good on the road. The last 2 seasons:

    ab hr rbi ba slg
    388 18 69 .325 .536

These would be MVP numbers from the catchers position, and very good even for a DH. I say if he can stay healthy and go to a good hitting environment (eg Boston, Yankees) then he can be very valuable. hed be better than Giambi as the Yankees' DH, plus he could backup aging Posada at catcher. I guarantee he would drive in well over 100 runs in that role.

--Pretty easy to guarantee something that is never going to happen. Piazza did not hit well enough last year for anybody to hire him as their regular DH. He did not catch at all. I'm he wants to keep playing he is going to have to accept a backup job somewhere. Maybe he could land a spot as a platoon DH/emergency catcher, but more likley he would have to accept a job as a PH/3rd catcher with an NL team. Its possible he could bounce back and help somebody in a limited role, if he is willing to take it.

he probably should or his rate stats will keep dropping. he's already a hof lock anyway...so he doesnt need to stay and prove anything to anyone.

Piazza should retire exactly when he doesn't want to play baseball anymore.

And teams should stop playing and paying him exactly when he is no longer valuable.
Hey, this is my public apology for suddenly disappearing and missing out on any projects I may have neglected.

Playing in Dodger Stadium, Shea, Petco and the Cementerium of Oakland will kill carrer hitting stats of any hitter. I would like see hitting once in his life in a hitters park as homefield.
You have to suffer a revolution to know what are you talking about.

              I agree.

Piazza's still a major league player, but he doesn't hit enough to DH regularly. He's a backup C/1B, and probably a straight-up platoon guy, playing against lefties, primarily. He's probably doesn't hit enough to be a regular in that you could now find a glove guy that's at Piazza's offensive level to do the job.
"I do not care if half the league strikes. Those who do it will encounter quick retribution. All will be suspended and I don't care if it wrecks the National League for five years. This is the United States of America and one citizen has as much right to play as another. The National League will go down the line with Robinson whatever the consequences. You will find if you go through with your intention that you have been guilty of complete madness."

                  ...

Better question, does he go into the hall as a Met or Dodger?

Obviously, I'd want him to be a Met, but his best seasons statistically I believe were with the Dodgers, but I think most people would view him as a Met. We need more HoFamers!

This has to be the end of the road for Piazza. He can't keep bouncing around from place to place, only to do worse than the year before. I believe he's going to retire. Plus, I think he will go in the HOF as a Met.

His father owns a car dealership in the area around my house...perhaps he'll be seen there if he in fact calls it quits...Mike Piazza selling cars...interesting.

Mike Piazza cares about his career rate stats dropping why exactly?

That's pertinent to his passion and desire to play the game of baseball or support his family how?

Still lacks a WS ring. Play as long as you can and hope that you can wear one before you retire.

Let's see someone is willing to pay him 7 figures to work 7 months of the year playing baseball and helping young hitters and catchers
Do the thing for another year he loves doing
                            Would you quit?

Because he always said he wanted to be the best hitting catcher of all-time. Note that he didn't say "Best all-around catcher".

As for supporting his family, if he hasn't enough money now, he's in BIG trouble.
