  • Nolan Ryan named Rangers President

Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan has agreed to become the Texas Rangers team president.

Great talent doesn't always make for a great administrator, but with the Rangers struggling as much as they have in recent years, especially with pitching, it's worth a shot. Hopefully he'll have an eye for great young talent.

damn it!!! Rangers steal Ryan from the Astros again!!!
I guess the Astros let him out of his personal service contract.
He just finished his duties at the elite pitching and hitting camp at minute maid park this week.

By all accounts he's done a very good job as owner of the Round Rock Express, so he's no stranger to the administration/personnel side of things.

      We shall see soon enough.

We can only hope that if this Ryan experiment goes well, it can be followed up by Cal Ripken leading the group that purchases the Orioles. (Soon, please!)

I personally have no idea how to feel about this. Other than Nolan being back with Texas I don't know enough about anything to have an opinion.

I just felt the only Rangers fan here should should post in the thread.

Certainly a good p.r. move by the Rangers.

All I've heard, from when I've heard it, is Ryan has done an excellent job with his minor league teams, so this is a little more than a P.R. move. He's paid his dues to run a team as much as any player has.

If it was anyone else it would look like a clear promotion for successful job performance...

Hasn't most of the talent on the winning teams in recent years that have come up through his teams?

Well he did get more accurate as he got older...

JM: Only did that for a couple of years and then we had a conspiracy so it kind of turned me sour. Our league's commissioner, Lew Ford(notes) at the time, was doing some shady things that ... I'd rather not talk about [laughs].
DB: Isn't he in Japan right now?
JM: I don't know where Lou is right now. He's probably fleeing the authorities [laughs].

Hope he stays on the job longer than Dan Marino.

Most of the local sports media hacks here in N. Texas are saying that this move was Tom Hicks' way of putting more butts in the seats. People outside of Texas might not realize just how popular the Ryan Express is in The Great State Of Texas.
