  • It's finally official: Orioles send Bedard to Seattle

    From the official team website

The Baltimore Orioles have sent their staff ace Erik Bedard to Seattle for a package of five players including:

    - Adam Jones, the self-proclaimed "centerpiece" of the deal, a CF prospect compared to Torii Hunter
    - George Sherrill, left-handed major league reliever
    - Chris Tillman, top 100 pitching prospect
    - Tony Butler, left-handed starting pitcher
    - Kam Mickolio, right-handed reliever

I, for one, am very happy with Andy McPhail's tenure so far. We've gotten ten players in return for two, and most of these guys are better than 90% of our farm system.

If Brian Roberts is traded for the latest 4-for-1 rumor, thats fourteen players for three. Fourteen, with a handful of them making the major league roster this season.

Finally we are rebuilding the right way.

Can't do that. But what I can do is buy MLB.tv. Which I might.

Darn. Now the email forward I sent this morning about "News from 2029" containing the piece "Bedard Trade Believed Close to Finalization" is no longer good.

Actually, I think they were about the same because I lettered in all sports, and I was a two-time state decathlon champion.

Knowing the O's and McPhail... Pie, Hill, Gallanger, and someone. Something that's just nuts and insane and there's no reason to deal with someone like that.

but what i've been hearing is this... Gallagher and Pie or Marquis and Murton

The latest rumor... RUMOR mind you... is Murton, Gallagher, Cedeno, and Veal. No Pie, no Hill.

In the meantime, Seattle gets their answer to Lackey. It looks like a two-team race in the AL West.

Although, after these last few weeks of waiting for this, it FEELS like 2029!
Way to go, Seattle! I think we can compete this year, REALLY compete. Especially if Richie Sexson shows up to play this year...

What would you consider to be the thing that Seattle does better than Anaheim?

Lackey is a match for Bedard and the Angels have a deeper rotation.

While they struggled a bit down the stretch, Speier and Shields are still there setting up K-Rod, so Seattle's bullpen isn't really an advantage for them.

Offensively, pretty sure Seattle hansn't kept pace with the acquisition of Hunter and the possible promotion of Wood. Wilkerson isn't exactly that one big piece they needed.

The Angels are one of the better defensive clubs, and so are Seattle...

Frankly, all this does is eliminate some of the relative gains Anaheim made over Seattle and, puts them back to where they were last year relative to their division leaders -- if that.

Lackey & Bedard do cancel each other out. I don't know if the rest of the rotation is so different. From accounts I've heard, their bullpen will be just fine setting up Putz, even without Sherrill.

Offensively, Seattle will have to rely on their youth (Clement, Balentin, Betancourt, etc etc) to catch up to Anaheim.

Bavasi did say in the press conference that he feels Anaheim has one more move left in them. If that happens, depending on who they get, it could move them significantly ahead next season.

Right now, on paper, I'd have to go Anaheim-Seattle-Texas/Oakland. But stranger things have happened.

There's a few things that can help the M's a lot, without any trades. Sexson can return to form (or more specifically, not get so unlucky), we can avoid overusing our bullpen, and Felix can take another step forward. I wouldn't be surprised to see Lopez improve, after he's had time to grieve the death of his brother.

All of those are quite plausible, maybe even likely. In fact, I wouldn't be particularly surprised if they ALL happened.

I didn't want the Mariners to lose Sherrill and Jones.

If I were an M's fan, I'd miss Tillman a heck of a lot more than Sherrill.
