While reasonable people may differ about what approach the commissioner's office should take to address PEDs, doesn't it seem basic that the man at the top should make a point of keeping himself informed by reading high-profile primary documents? Well, some would think so.

I agree with you. Selig is taking the ostrich approach to the can of worms he opened with the Mitchell Report. Selig also has the comfort of being protected. Congress didn't probe into what Selig said about not supporting the silence of the owners concerning the Mitchell Report and the accusations of Selig knowing about John Rockers PED use was swept right under the rug without no follow up press in the matter. I'm still steamed that Selig and Reinsdorf didn't even get their hands slapped by the judicial system after they stole 280mil from the players.

FYI - Bonds is not an active player and he hasn't been convicted of anything.

So, from an administrative point of view, what exactly would be the purpose?

It's not just about Bonds, it's about the image of major league baseball. Call it a political matter, rather than administrative, which would be in line with much of what the commish office has historically been about. Telling the press that he's not going to bother reading the relevant documents (whether they pertain to Bonds or any other aspect of the matter) is like, say, a United States Senator, hypothetically, declining to read the National Intelligence Estimate. If you can imagine such a thing.

There is a sense of sustainability to deceit so long as the perpetrator continues to do and say the right things, but one crosses the line of hubris when he longer bothers to play the role, and goes so far as the let public know he's not even going through the motions.

Well, I'm saying that is the image this projects - I guess only Selig knows how that meshes with his actual feelings.
