  • First meaningful game

Opening Day is about 15 hours away. As you all know, it's in Japan, so we won't see it until early morning (6 AM Eastern, 3 AM Pacific). What do you guys think about games in Japan, China, etc? I don't mind myself, but I'd rather not stay up all night to watch a baseball game (But I probably will )

Didn't think so. I'll see you again tomorrow night around the top of the ninth."

MLB is trying to open the door in China but I don't see how ST games in China is helping the teams prepare for the regular season with the long flights involved.

Opening day in Japan sucks for players and fans considering that MLB is a American based sport. Once again tradition is being sacrificed for marketing with Selig heading the way. Opening day belongs in Cincinnati as far as I'm concerned.

Bingo to above. While you can't argue that Selig has helped boost attendance and profit for baseball, all while making the league more competitive thanks to revenue sharing (which is a bit socialistic), the guy has always had money ahead of tradition.

From a traditionalist (not to be confused with a purist) viewpoint, I really don't like the Japan opening day. I was ok with the Dodgers/Padres series because it wasn't apart of the regular season and served as an ambassador of the American side of the sport to the growing Chinese side. However, I think Japan has been growing exponentially in baseball and their best team could compete in the MLB and IMO make the playoffs no problem. It just seems absurd for us to be playing two American teams in Japan for an opening series for an American league. Like Old Sweater said, it's hard on the players and fans.

Not from a tradionalist or realist, but just a fan's point of view, I hate this. I have been waiting for baseball season since January (end of college football). I'll be at work when this game is on. Same thing tomorrow. So to me, the season STILL ain't starting until the weekend.

Why not play these games here, put them on in primetime, so everyone can see them, then sometime this weekend, put a series over there, that way no one goes without their baseball fix.

Or better yet, don't play any regular season games out of the country.

            That makes too much sense.

I get up @ 7 AM to go to work, I might watch at least 15 minutes of the game.

OPENING DAY BELONGS TO CINCINNATI. I assume Cincy is the only city that shuts down for the first game of the baseball season. I really can't wait to go to Opening Day and experience the parade, the festival, the on-field ceremonies and of course, the game.

I'm OK with Spring Training games anywhere in the world, why if MLB wants to popularize the sport around the world, why not have all teams move from Arizona and Florida (I know its stupid and will not happen and I don't want it) and have Spring Training in Japan and some other place (I don't think the US government would be thrilled with ST in China).
Unlike most other team sports, in which teams usually have an equivalent number of players on the field at any given time, in baseball the hitting team is at a numerical disadvantage, with a maximum of 5 players and 2 base coaches on the field at any time, compared to the fielding team's 9 players. For this reason, leaving the dugout to join a fight is generally considered acceptable in that it results in numerical equivalence on the field, and a fairer fight.

I love it......a 9:00pm start so I don't have to worry about a late night, and I get to see the whole game!! Not a very inspiring start by Daisuke in front of his countryfolk. But the game is only young.

I have directtv. For the last 3 years that I have owned it, I have ALWAYS gotten ESPN2. Guess what channel I all of a sudden am not getting this morning? Yep! No ESPN2 for me! I get every other channel but not that one. Talk about bogus! I'm actually on the line with Directtv customer service now.

Some guy was just on ESPN radio saying he didn't have no signal. I guess he meant satellite.

Yeah I see that Daisuke had a rough 1st inning. Following the game at MLB.com and I think he had 30 pitches in the 1st inning with only 13 for strikes along with a HBP & WP. I'd say the kid is a bit nervous in front of his home crowd.
