  • Viagra Enhances Athletic Performance

In June, 2006, a study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology reported that "Sildenafil (Viagra) significantly improved the cardiovascular and exercise performance.

Is it possible that some baseball players use Viagra? Is it possible that some players, especially pitchers, had their performances enhanced by using Viagra?

    This is great.

Very interesting article, but it leaves me wondering about some things. First, why do they specifically mention pitchers? Also, it seems that 10 cyclists is an awfully small sample size. Also, do they really improve by 45%? That seems like a ridiculously high percentage.

Didn't Rafael Palmeiro used to do commercials for Viagra?

Maybe that's why he tested positive.

yeah...and that is the first thing I thought when I saw this

we need to remember that there are so many things you can take that will give you an edge in sports. people say they hate steroids because of the edge, yet don't hate other things that give significant results. an actuality we hate steroids because we have been told we should hate them, just like any other illegal drug. We buy into all of the "information" told to us and ignore information that goes against this.

Edge heck. Some tend to give PED's most of the credit with a Popeye boost in stats.

Good point. Don't forget everybody, players were using amphetamines long before steroids existed. I heard somewhere that back in the '60s or '70s, there were two coffee pots in locker rooms. One was regular coffee, the other had amphetamines in it

That coffee could still be perking today. Tony Gwynn said he always had to check and make sure he got the regular coffee.

Didn't Bonds test positive for amphetamines a couple years ago?

I think we'd notice if players were using Viagra during a game.

All the sophistry artists weighing in I see. The use of a PED, any PED, is wrong, whether it's illegal or not. Sports should be about who's got the best combination of ability and smarts, not who's got the best combination of money and a good pharmacist.
