  • Will A-Rod be effected by Canseco?

Canseco surprised A-Rod is not on Mitchell's list

During yesterday's Fox Business Network's "Happy Hour," Jose Canseco had an observation concerning a current, very prominent Yankee. When asked whether Alex Rodriguez should have been mentioned in the Mitchell Report, Canseco responded: "All I can say is the Mitchell Report is incomplete. I could not believe that his name was not in the report."

Earlier in the afternoon, as Mitchell was prepared to release his report, Canseco attempted to enter the news conference. Canseco, a virtual certainty to be named in the report, was turned down by Major League Baseball officials.

"It's OK," Canseco said, smiling. "I'm not in the media."

Canseco, whose 2005 book "Juiced" set off a chain of events that led to the current tougher drug-testing plan, said he was coincidentally staying in the same hotel, the Grand Hyatt, where the news conference was being held. Doug Ames, Canseco's business manager, said the former slugger was in town to announce a deal for his book "Vindicated," the sequel to "Juiced," in which Canseco detailed his own steroid usage and that of fellow players.

Canseco said he met with Mitchell "a long time ago."

Someone should have hired him for the week and given him press creds. He is a part of the story.

I don't have a problem with that. At least he is not hiding. He may be the only one out there actually embracing the totality of the issue.

And does he have any hard, cold evidence to back that up? That is something that is basically missing with a lot of the names being thrown out there by the report.

Canseco is the worst kind of scum.
Sitting pretty now, acting like he's the baseball savior when he was one of the most perverse and blatant users.

He was only trying to get in because he's got another book to sell.
And throwing Alex's name around is a good way to get pub.

I said, Mr. Barrow, there is only one answer to that - Mr. Gehrig is terribly underpaid."- Yankees outfielder Joe DiMaggio

Actually, in reading the report, there's pretty conclusive evidence against a lot of the guys.

Would that require Arod to swear under oath that he never took steroids or HGH?

ARod isn't the one slandering or defaming...so why would he be on the stand?

Canseco would be the one that has to answer why it is that he's so sure ARod belongs on the list.

Never has Alex's name been uttered when it came to PEDs except from Jose who's got an axe to grind.

I think that personal cheques written to Radomski (especially when there was more than one) are quite enough. It's absurd to expect 'hard evidence'. What do you want, a snapshot of a guy with a needle in his butt? Or would that not be enough. A video of a guy shooting with the accompanying audio: "Alright, I am about to inject myself with anabolic steroids"?

That's the real problem with wanting to expose all past users (witch-hunt style). There is absolutley no way to prove 100% that a player actually used, other than relying on witnesses and evidence of the type that was in the report (cheques, letters, courier packages etc...). This is why (unfortunately) we have to depend on guys like Canseco, Radomski etc... So far, Canseco hasn't been wrong about any of they guys he's named as users. While I can't say that I admire or respect him, I do trust him, to a degree, when it comes to stuff like this.

To be able to sue for slander, you have to prove that the accusation itself is a lie and that the slanderer has malicious intent. It's extremely difficult to do that.

Without Canseco in this mess, the Mitchell report may not have been created. I think his book "Juiced" really opened some eyes. Pretty much everyone he named in the book was listed on the report. What I find most ironic is the fact that Canseco could care less about MLB, but in a round about way, he's helping with the clean up process. It'll be interesting to see what policies are put into place, and if and how they will be inforced in the future.

first off, Arod's a public figure. So unless Canseco KNOWS its a lie, he will be protected. Else, how does the Enquirer stay in business?

Also, slander is an exceedingly tough thing to prove to the point of collecting a judgement.

Canseco has been very careful to keep his exact opinion and specifics a secret. Either to pump up his forthcoming book sales or to keep from getting sued. In interviews he has said that he is surprised ARod's name is not mentioned and that ARod is not as squeaky clean as we are led to believe but when asked for specifics he clams up.

Personally I think his ARod info is bull. He is either making it up or is only basing his view on rumors and hearsay. If Canseco had concrete evidence or anything beyond a whisper about ARod he would have put it in his first book. That isn't to say that ARod is in fact squeaky clean, he might very well be using or used something, but I don't believe Canseco has anything on him above a rumor.
