    Clemens
    Clemens fumes over Jay 'confusion'

    SPORTS REPORTERS
Another Blue Jays contract lob to Jose Canseco was swatted away
yesterday as the stalemate grew more serious with the entry of
pitcher Roger Clemens into the fray.
Toronto general manager Gord Ash is said to have offered Canseco
a one-year deal for $3 million (U.S.) on the same day Clemens
expressed disappointment with the team's negotiating stance in an
interview posted on the pitcher's personal Web site.
''To know what he's been offered . . . you know, it saddens me,''
Clemens said of his friend and teammate.
''Here's a guy who I begged and pleaded to come play in Toronto,
to have a presence and help the the young players step it up -
and he signed for next to nothing, in relative terms.
''And now, to offer him what they are offering . . . I won't even
call it a joke, because it's not funny to him or me.''
Canseco's overdramatized contract woes have been regarded as
something of an amusing distraction until now. That Clemens
appears to regard the retaining of Canseco as a must is
potentially a sign the Jays won't be able to satisfy the pitcher
that the team is committed to winning.
If that's the case, the Internet musings of Clemens, who has been
mentioned in numerous trade rumours this week, could be his way
of paving a road for himself out of Toronto.
Clemens said he is disappointed with all the off-field problems
the team has experienced, including a reduced player budget and
its threat to move to Exhibition Stadium.
''I would think I'd have heard from (general manager) Gord Ash,
or someone on the team, about which way things are going with the
Blue Jays,'' he said. ''After all, this uncertainty has been
lingering for two whole years. And that's the biggest
    disappointment to me.
''Who's going to own the team? What do they want to do? Are they
going to get the budget to go get some guys who will help bring
    another World Series to Toronto?''
Clemens made his comments before the latest contract offer to
Canseco. But Juan Iglesias, the Miami-based agent for Canseco,
    said Ash's offer changed nothing.
''He's always shuffling the numbers around, but it's always $3
million,'' Iglesias said. ''It used to be $1.5 (million
guaranteed) and $1.5 (million in incentives), then $2.25
    (million) and $750,000.
''Now, it's $3 million guaranteed, one year, no incentives,'' he
said. ''And that's not going to do it.
''I mean, we understand Gord's got some budget problems and I
know you've still got to budget incentives,'' Iglesias said.
    ''That's probably where Gord's coming from . . . how his hands
    might be tied.''
For all his protestations, Iglesias doesn't have much leverage.
The Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles, two teams cited as
possible destinations for Canseco, don't seem interested. That
means Canseco could end up playing for another one-year deal
here, a situation that likely won't thrill him or Clemens.
''I hope we can stop Jose from leaving,'' Clemens said. ''Canseco
at three years and $15 million is a bargain in today's market.''
Clemens said he'd assumed the team would lock up Canseco and ''go
get three more top-notchers that will really bolster our
    lineup.''
But he now figures that general managers around baseball hope to
take advantage of a bad situation in Toronto and give up less to
the Jays in return for certain players.
''All the other teams know exactly the state the team is in, the
confusion about the larger vision for the future,'' he said.
All this has left a bad taste in the mouth of Clemens, who sounds
more and more like a player about to say goodbye.
''I hope people remember that this makes two years now that they
'don't know,' '' he said of the team's vision of what direction
    it will take.
''That was not what I was told the game plan was when I made the
decision to come to Toronto over a number of other teams that
    wanted me.''

No excuse for 'liar' Clemens -Stewart

BYLINE: By Ron Borges Special to The Star (Boston Globe)

    SECTION: SPORTS; Pg. F1

    LENGTH: 410 words

    DATELINE: OAKLAND

Dave Stewart heard the whole thing, and he didn't like a word of it.

"I heard exactly what he said and it wasn't real pleasant," Stewart said about the ugly second-inning incident yesterday in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series that led to the ejection of Roger Clemens by home plate umpire Terry Cooney, seven innings prior to the Oakland A's ejection of the entire Red Sox team from the playoffs. The A's won 3-1.

"After he cursed him the first time, Cooney told him to shut up and he said, 'Just keep your (expletive) mask on and call the (expletive) game,' " Stewart continued. "He said, 'Get your (expletive) butt behind the plate right now.' Then he repeated what he said the first time. The guy is back there doing the best he can. He was fair both ways. I thought he was calling one of the best games I'd seen him call.

"It (upset) me, to be honest. There's no excuse for what took place that inning. There's the game of baseball and the game of sportsmanship, and those games have been going on a lot longer than Roger Clemens or the Boston Red Sox.

"Clemens can deny what he wants to deny, but if he denies saying that, he's a liar. You curse out an umpire like that, you get thrown out. The guy gave him a chance to take it back. Cooney said, 'Shut up,' and Clemens said the exact same things again. When he repeated it, Cooney did what he's supposed to do. He threw him out."

As Stewart spoke, the disgust in his voice was clearer than Clemens' ugly words had been two hours earlier, words Clemens was upstairs quietly denying in the calm of a post-game interview room.

Stewart would have none of those denials. He had just beaten Boston for the ninth straight time in games started by Clemens - and second in these playoffs - winning the ALCS most valuable player award along the way, yet still found himself upstaged.

"I'm tired of Roger Clemens and I'm tired of the Boston Red Sox," Stewart said.

According to several A's, Clemens allegedly had been hollering some vile invectives at Cooney the night before, as well as more than a few insulting remarks directed at A's pitcher Bob Welch, a recovering alcoholic.

When Clemens was ejected, the Red Sox were left helpless.

Stewart, who held Boston to one run on four hits in the opener, took a two-hit shutout into the ninth. He left after a leadoff double by Ellis Burks and an RBI single by Jody Reed. Rick Honeycutt ended it quickly.

now there are a ton more that I can post...what I am kind of trying to do is to show the non-believers that Clemens is not the sweet guy they think he is...and to say that Bonds gets worse treatment because of attitude is crazy.

Who in the world ever thought Clemens was a sweet guy? Especially on this board.

          you'd be surprised

first reason you get for why someone hates Bonds is he is a jerk...then you say Clemens is a jerk and they defend him.

Bonds is just the bigger jerk.

Dumb answers to to questions, not provoking questions.

Speaking of Ruth, he talks about taking his slugging and home run records and ends with this line," Don't talk about him ( Ruth) no more." As I've said in the past, Ruth is not God he's been talked about before but that one by Barry was a classic. What the heck was he thinking, what could be gained.

How about this question from years back, asked what he likes to do when away from the game, he answers, "none of your business."
The nerve of a reporter asking such a probing, sensitive question.

One of his best going back before he was even suspect. Asked what he thought about steroids in the game of baseball, Barry says " It's none of the people's business what the players do." This guy needs a PR man, his mouth is his worst enemy

OK lets hear Barry's old BS, he's a black man who won't kowtow to the white man, thats why he's not liked.
Roger has some rough edges, not always Mr. nice guy not here to defend him but Barry is in a class all his own.

hmm...we agreed Bonds is a jerk and then when I said Clemens is one you defended him....its almost like I predicted it

Was I misunderstood? I don't see where I defended Roger. I said that Barry was the bigger jerk and over the years his mouth has given us more ammo to show why. I don't recall Roger shooting of his mouth as often as Barry, there is just more of Barry to dislike. I think when I said Barry was the bigger jerk it's understood that they were both jerks.

Maybe by talking less Roger came off looking better. Barry could have pulled a Steve Carlton. Rather than fight off the press, he didn't speak to them for years.
