I remember him first coming to my attention when he had a 30+ game hitting streak in 06, i think he's quite underrated by many and rarely in the limelight. Easily the best offensive 2B at the moment, and has shown he can hit for good power and average.
So far this season he's leading the majors in HR (9), SLG (.810!) and TB (68), XBH (19) and OPS (1.238) (quite convincingly in many of those as well, how often does a 2B do that?), as well as top 5 in hits and doubles and second in RBI.

Will this finally be the season when he gets the recognition he deserves?

I'm not so sure he didn't get that recognition last year. He was the leading NL MVP candidate until he got hurt.

Supposedly, Joe Morgan commented recently that Utley has a chance to be the greatest offensive second baseman in major league history. Ummm...Joe, Rogers Hornsby says hi.
Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.-Crash Davis

I think Braves fans knew Utley was legit when he hit that 9th inning bomb off of Smoltz (when he was closing) to center field. It was a splitter that was maybe half a foot away from his right foot and he just raked it.

          Speaking of Braves:

          In the last 154 games,
          46 2Bs, 4 3Bs, 35 HRs, and 207 hits in 592 At-Bats (688 PAs)

          .350/.430/.618

That, of course, is Chipper Jones. Coincidentally, these two just had ridiculous stretches to start off the season.

joe is so arrogant he probably thinks its himself

and he probably would say "you mean Roger Clemens? no he's a pitcher" if you said that to him!

He said that when all is said and done, Utley may be the best all-around offensive second baseman ever. Hornsby never hit for that much power.

--You may want to do a little fact checking. Hornsby was the first NL player to hit 40 HR. He led the league in slugging 9 times - including 6 in a row. I don't think Utley is liable to match that record.

I dont think anyone realistically thinks that Utley will end up with a better career than Hornsby. But he has potential to be a top 10 or even top 5 2B ever, which is no mean achievement.

How about Utley does better than Roberto Alomar over six or so years first? lol
                    (fantasy football)
JM: Only did that for a couple of years and then we had a conspiracy so it kind of turned me sour. Our league's commissioner, Lew Ford(notes) at the time, was doing some shady things that ... I'd rather not talk about [laughs].
DB: Isn't he in Japan right now?
JM: I don't know where Lou is right now. He's probably fleeing the authorities [laughs].

For those that care about these sorts of things, zone rating says Alomar was extremely overrated as a second baseman, with only a couple very good years and a whole bunch of below-average ones. (Double-play ability not included.)
