I'm not sure I understand. Is Joba a reliever for a short time (like Johan Santana and Francisco Liriano where) or is Girardi making him a reliever permanently?

I'll admit I am an idiot....I figured Hank would be more polished than George...boy was I wrong. A whole new reason to hate the Yanks...haha

Hank says some of the dumbest things, and I thought it was going to get boreing after George steped down.

they would have to prepare him for the rotation anyway and that's going to take time and that's not going to help the Yanks current pitching situration. So why rush him into the rotation and risk injury and possibley loseing out on a young pitcher with great stuff for good?

actually what am I thinking....start him...pitch him 9 every game and tell him to throw lights out the entire game. unless he's Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson or Roger Clemens I see his arm dying. One less dominating reliever in the American League.

but at least he seems more mature than Joel Zumaya at this point so you don't have to worry about him playing too much Guitar Hero or flipping ATV's or doing keg stands!

Starter. He's wasted in the set-up role and won't close for 3 more years. Don't make him a starter tomorrow but he shouldn't be a set-up man for 3 years.

few players can throw high 90's or 100 and survive as a starter...maybe Joba can. I see Joba as more of a Zumaya then a Verlander though. If anything you have the greatest closer in baseball history getting old and you have a young stud ready to replace him

what kind of moron is Hank though?

    look at this list

    the 100 mph club

    by my count 37 players

    15 starters
    22 relievers

and if you look at the top scores, most are relievers. Hanks gonna be pissed when Joba's arm dies from trying to throw 100 the entire game!

I think it's worth trying him out as a starter. Maybe not this year but definitely next year. He might be better off as a reliever but I personally want to see him start. It might turn out that he's better as a reliever. I don't think the great Mariano would have been a great starter and as much as I love him, a closer is not as valuable as a starter. 150 innings > 80 innings. I am divided on the issue though.

I'll just stick with what Girardi decides.

Hankie S. is acting like a fantasy leaguer.

I should add one thing: I mean his role right now, not in a few years

By now, I'm sure most of you have heard Hank Steinbrenner's comments that Joba should be a starter now. He said, "There is no question about it, you don't have a guy with a 100-mile-per-hour fastball and keep him as a set-up guy. You just don't do that. You have to be an idiot to do that." However, Cashman said, "Joba's staying in the bullpen right now," Cashman told Newsday on Monday. "That's where we're at. [Putting him in the rotation is] not something that's going to happen here early on, and [Hank] knows that. We've talked about it. I don't know what set him off." On Monday, the two talked it out and came to some agreement. I ask you, what should Joba's role be?
