  • Who's the better Carlos?

Who is the more productive player?
Who is the better offensive player?
Try to keep in mind that they play different positions and are asked to do different things defensively.
    Carlos Lee
    or
    Carlos Beltran
    ? discuss.

Personally, I think Beltran is over rated, but I also dont like him, so that could be bias talking, but I gotta give him respect for what he does. I would take Beltran over Lee. Dont get me wrong, Lee is a fantastic player, but he gets out numbered in most major statstical categories by Beltran.

I always thought Carlos Lee was a tad overrated. As a hitter they might be somewhat close, but Beltran can field and run better. Easily Beltran.

I believe Lee hits for a better average and more power over his career and now. Correct me if I am wrong.
The reason for the comparison is the Astros had an offer of 100 mill. on the table to both, one took it and signed the other didn't.

I read a lot of that on this site (that Carlos Lee is overated) but I am trying to get an objective opinion. He has done everything asked of him in an Astros uniform. You have to remember that he is patrolling the smallest left field this side of the green monster. We have a centerfielder to chase down the balls in the gaps.
I realize Beltran is a plus CF, but I put more weight defensively on that position, so in other words it's more important at his position.
I tend to believe Beltran is very talented but plays in flashes and does not have the cosistency of Carlos Lee and I think the numbers bear that out, what do you think?

The two players are basically a push in OPS+, but Beltran dominates Lee in Warp3 and Win Shares.

I don't think because he is asked to do something different that gives him a free pass. Beltran is definitly the better all around player and they are close enough as hitters (Beltran had an insane year in 2006, he could always shoot back up to that level) to say that Beltran's other skills beat Lee out.

He was just adjusting to the Mets in 2005, he had a huge year after that.

To me, Beltran seems to lack heart and desire. He doesn't play injured and he doesn't like putting himself at risk, even in the slightest sense. I think that if he was really motivated, he could be a much better player.

That being said, Beltran definitely has more physical talent and is the all-around better player. Lee dominates weak pitching, but I've seen him look a little lost in the past. Granted, the majority of the action I've seen him in was on the Sox and the Brewers (local channels) and he's matured quite a bit since his early days.

Beltran over Lee: great speed game, a defensive plus in a demanding possition and better discipline at plate.
You have to suffer a revolution to know what are you talking about.

Carlos Lee is a better hitter. Beltran isn't bad but he's very streaky and can drive you nuts sometimes when he takes 3 strikes our swings at pitches out of the zone. In all other facets, Beltran is the better player so I'd take Beltran over Lee.

Carlos Beltran is better except in brute strength.
