  • The Mighty "Juan" Pierre

    2008 Juan Pierre/.324/.395/.382/9 SB/8 runs/11 rbi

    All this in 68 AB's

One of the reasons the Dodgers are winning more lately is that the Mighty "Juan" is playing more.

Little guy has a great month and not one attaboy from all the Juan haters that call him nothing but a out machine. Sit Pierre and you are sitting a sure/200 hit/100 runs scored and 40 stolen bases. It's that simple to figure out. Once again Juan is putting up the career stats that the Dodgers paid for. With the other bats that are producing for the Dodgers this year I think it is crazy not to put Juan in front of them each and every game.

I'd have to agree with you, but he isn't as little as everyone thinks. He wears a baggy uniform all the time which hides the fact that's he's quite muscular. He keeps himself in good shape and it shows in his stats.

As far as his playing ability, I've always wondered why so many people refuse to believe in him. Do you think it's because he isn't flashy and doesn't try to draw attention to himself?

Well of course. He has had a nice first month; good for him. The man is basically all batting average and steals, once again. However, 9 SB and just 1 CS is nice. I guess it's the same reason that Nate McLouth isn't getting any due for his super first month. It IS the first month after all.

I will say this though: because of the kind of player he is and his recent history, he'll once again be in the league "leaders" in outs. He has generally been an out machine over the course of a season.

Yeah, Pierre's productive week-end has, for the moment, off-set a dismal start. Until then he had been cruising along at a .680 OPS. Now he is up to .777. Only once in the last three seasons has Pierre broken the .700 OPS level and that was at a .717 clip in 2006.

Couple that with mediocre defensive skills and you have a guy that for all his electrifying speed is an overall liability. Offer the rest of the NL this deal: The Dodgers will guarantee Pierre 4 plate appearances a game for the rest of the season if someone else will pay his salary. Fourteen teams will volunteer to pickup the tab (only the miserly Marlins will pass up this opportunity).

          I <3 whoever sponsored Pierre's B-R page. In a brotherly way.

And it's waaaaaaaaay too early to jump on the Juan Pierre bandwagon. If he keeps this up throughout the entire season, he'll almost be worthy of a starting spot.

It takes a rather unique player to have three 200 Hit / 500 Out seasons!

I say it's solely because he can't slug worth a crud. Some slugging is valuble in the leadoff spot too.

The problem is that he had a very good month by his standards, and his OPS is still only just above league average. If he keeps this up the whole year, he'll wind up with a good enough season, but he really needs to have more then 4 EBHs (all doubles) in 68 at bats before we start going crazy about him

It's not just one month. It's 200 hits, 40 stolen bases and most important it is the 100 runs scored every year. Throw in the havoc created on the bases and the hardest to stirke out=productive outs and he is well worth having in the lineup every day.

Have a link to back that IMO? Thats calling every manager Pierre has played for stupid for putting him in the lineup everyday till this year.

Miserly Marlins? They're a 1/2 game outta first bud.

The Mighty "Juan" also doubled off Jon Herrera at first last night with a rocket 3 bouncer!!!

It IS just one month right now.

Pierre hasn't scored 100 runs in a season since 2004, though he was in the nineties twice. This may be part of the teams they're on, but let me give you a comparison:

                          2007
                          Jimmy Rollins - 139 runs, 778 PA
                          Jose Reyes - 119 runs, 765 PA
                          Grady Sizemore - 118 runs, 748 PA
                          Ichiro Suzuki - 111 runs, 736 PA
                          Juan Pierre - 96 runs, 729 PA
                          Brian Roberts - 103 runs, 716 PA
                          Carl Crawford - 94 runs, 624 PA
                          Kelly Johnson - 91 runs, 608 PA

Just that sampling of leadoff hitters tells me that with that amount of plate appearances, Pierre should be scoring about 10-20 runs more, but he isn't. Why?

Divisional placement doesn't change the fact that Jeff Loria likes to play Ebeneezer Scrooge every year at the annual Christmas Carol play. :P

Link?? I said if an offer was made. I didn't say an offer had been made. It is my opinion. As for managers being stupid, name-calling seems to be more in your skill set than mine so I will leave that up to you. His prior managers were Buddy Bell, Clint Hurdle, Jeff Torborg, Jack McKeon, Dusty Baker, and Grady Little.

As for the word "miserly" it means cheap. It is very possible for a team to be miserly and competitive (at least in the short run).
