  • Pitchers who got to double-digit wins without a loss

    With Brandon Webb now 8-0,

can anyone recall other instances of pitches who got to at least 10 wins before losing their first game of the season?

One of My favorites: Aaron Small for the Yankees in 2005 went 10-0 for the season. He was brought up to the team on July 20. As a Yankee fan I'll walways love him for saving our season.

        Tom Zachary?
Mythical SF Chronicle scouting report: "That Jeff runs like a deer. Unfortunately, he also hits AND throws like one." I am Venus DeMilo - NO ARM! I can play like a big leaguer, I can field like Luzinski, run like Lombardi. The secret to managing is keeping the ones who hate you away from the undecided ones. I think Roy Face (17-0 in mid-September 1959) has got to be the winner.

How about reaching double digits in wins to start a season without a loss AND without a no decision - that's what makes Webb's start so incredible.

Only four guys have finished a season with double-digit wins and no losses.

                        Tom Zachary 1929 12 0
                        Dennis Lamp 1985 11 0
                        Aaron Small 2005 10 0
                        Howie Krist 1941 10 0

Here's the longest GS streak to start the season without a loss since 1956. I can't believe McNally's was 26 games. That's ridiculous.

Unfortunately I can't sort by wins so here's the guys with 10 or more wins to start the season without a loss:

                          Dave Mcnally 1969- 15
                          Roger Clemens 1986- 14
                          Ron Guidry 1978- 13
                          Andy Hawkins 1985- 11
                          Roger Clemens 1997- 11
                          Brooks Lawrence 1956- 10
                          Juan Marichal 1966- 10
                          Roger Moret 1973- 10

McNally was very erratic in his first 27 games (26 starts).
                            171 1/3 innings before a loss.

                            Roger Clemens 1986- 14
                            123 2/3 innings before a loss.

                            Andy Hawkins 1985- 11
69 2/3 innings of 11 consecutive wins to start the season.

                            Brooks Lawrence 1956- 10
                            123 innings before a loss.
                            24 games (16 starts).

                            Juan Marichal 1966- 10
I find this start most fascinating.
Marichal was 10-0 in his 1st 11 starts.
His only no-decision was in a 13 inning game in which he pitched a full 10 innings.
He pitched 101 innings in his 1st 11 starts.
He averaged over 9 innings in his 1st 11 starts without a loss. That must be a record for plural starts.
