Does MLB do a good job of promoting it's players? For example LeBron James seems to be in every other commercial nationally and Payton Manning, but I rarely see baseball players doing commercial other than Cal Ripken who has been retired for quite some time.

baseball players have the disadvantage of playing pretty much every day for half the year, so have much less time for anything like that.
Also, this is only a generalization but NFL stars tend to have ego's that would barely fit into the polo grounds outfield, so seeing themselves on TV getting as much attention as possible is something that they'd probably like.
