  • 2008 Triple Crown Tracker

Well, we are approaching the 1/3rd mark and I was just looking at all the potential triple crown winners for this year.

    American League Batting Triple Crown
    Kevin Youkilis: .327 BA(1st), 9 HR(5th), 34 RBI(4th)
    Josh Hamilton: .319 BA(4th), 11 HR(1st), 50 RBI(1st)

    American League Pitching Triple Crown
    Cliff Lee: 6 W(3rd), 46 K(10th), 1.37 ERA(1st)
    Daisuke Matsuzaka: 7 W(1st), 46 K(10th), 2.15 ERA(2nd)
    Ervin Santana: 6 W(3rd), 50 K(7th), 2.97 ERA(9th)

    National League Batting Triple Crown
    Chipper Jones: .410 BA(1st), 11 HR(7th), 32 RBI(9th)
    Lance Berkman: .389 BA(2nd), 16 HR(1st), 44 RBI(1st)
    Ryan Ludwick: .350 BA(Not Enough PA), 12 HR(5th), 32 RBI(9th)

    National League Pitching Triple Crown
    Edinson Volquez: 7 W(2nd), 62 K(2nd), 1.33 ERA(1st)
    Tim Lincecum: 5 W(7th), 63 K(1st), 1.92 ERA(2nd)
    Cole Hamels: 5 W(7th), 54 K(7th), 2.89 ERA(10th)

Now I'm sure there are plenty candidates but I just pick ones that were in the top 10 of all the triple crown caregories.
Unlike most other team sports, in which teams usually have an equivalent number of players on the field at any given time, in baseball the hitting team is at a numerical disadvantage, with a maximum of 5 players and 2 base coaches on the field at any time, compared to the fielding team's 9 players. For this reason, leaving the dugout to join a fight is generally considered acceptable in that it results in numerical equivalence on the field, and a fairer fight.

It's pretty impressive that Ludwick is up there in HR and RBI leaders despite not having enough PA's to qualify for the batting average leaders.

How can you leave out Brandon Webb?

      9 wins
      2.56 ERA
      49 Ks

And unlike many on this list, he is a former Cy Young award winner playing for a good team. So the track record would suggest its a possibility.

        /\ This is why /\

The only exception I made to this was Ryan Ludwick but because the only thing leaving him out of the top 10 is plate appearances, I thought it would be interesting toshow this was currently the only thing holding him back.

The way he's hitting the ball, he'll catch up soon enough.

I cant see anyone other than Berkman or Chipper challenging for the hitters crown this year. If Berkman is leading all 3 categories by the all star break he would have a shot, although RBI's will be down to alot of luck.
For instance Jones (.409/11/33) has less RBI's than Ortiz (.253/10/37), and i think its quite clear who's been the better hitter this year.

you still have to hit with runners in scoring position, when pitcher should be more focused, remember RBI's are more important to the team than average or homeruns. The sluggers job is to help his team win games and RBI's are he way to do that. So although the guy that drives in the runs had nothing to do to help the people in front of him get on base, his RBI's are very valuable as a measurement as to what kind of producer he is and make them a very weighted stat for teams.

That BA is miles off the leading guys. He'll need to hit .400 for the rest of the season to even have a shot at it. Good chance at the other 2 categories though.
