  • griffey says alleged steroid talk with bonds did not happen

"'They can't look at mine. They can't look at mine,' Griffey said Tuesday, suggesting his stats shouldn't be tainted despite the era in which he has played. 'You all know good and damn well that what you see is what you get. You can look at other people and speculate all you want. But you guys know from looking at me that I didn't touch a thing.'

"Griffey's relationship with Bonds, dating to their childhood, and a particular gathering at Griffey's Orlando home are subjects of another book on Bonds. Love Me, Hate Me: Barry Bonds and the Making of an Antihero, written by Jeff Pearlman and published by Harper Collins, is scheduled to be in stores May 9.

"According to the Love Me, Hate Me excerpt, which was posted on ESPN's Web site and will run in the network's magazine, Bonds told Griffey after the 1998 season that he was preparing to use steroids -- 'some hard-core stuff' -- after he saw what they did for Mark McGwire, who set the single-season homers record that year.

"Griffey admitted he hosted Bonds several times at his home, but said he doesn't remember the dinner conversation described in the excerpt."
-john shea, sf chronicle staff writer, wednesday, 15 march 2006

    book excerpt:
"Griffey was asked if he believes Bonds is natural.
'Does it really matter what I think?' he said before pausing. 'Yeah, yeah.'"

who is gonna be the first to call junior a fool, numbskull, or worse for stating that bonds did not use?

is that, and will that be, your take whenever you come across a player who either defends bonds or shrugs that it's time to move on?

WC, the fact that Griffey stated he "did not remember" having that conversation, says nothing about Bonds' guilt or not. Simply means Grif doesn't want to create an enormous snowball by admitting he told him that.

nothing about bonds' guilt or innocence, correct.
but you are now in the same leaky boat as the two sf chronicle reporters, telling us the motive.

Motive for what? Motive why people don't want to come out publicly and state their opinions? Why would anyone want to get involved in such a sh t storm.

"no comment" would be more appropriate, then. agreed?
                let 'em think what they want;
it would not be the first nor last time that that would be the answer.

When you factor is his friendship with Bonds, saying he doesn't remember the conversation, is in essence, a "no comment" with some bias sprinkled in.

so, his answer is not the same as "no comment."

purposeful words, man serve a purpose. junior has been around long enough to know what his words will appear to be, and that his words will be scrutinized.

Assume that the conversation did take place. Knowing his relationship with Bonds, if Griff comes out and simply says "no comment" it might cause a lean toward the side of guilt, or him protecting his friend.

If he says what he says, then it's him simply "not remembering" so it doesn't mean it happened, and doesn't mean it didn't. It's in essence a "no comment" but instead of things swaying toward the guilt side, they are slightly swung toward the not guilty side.

I agree, Junior is media savvy enough to know the different impacts a "no comment" would have, and a "I don't remember that" comment would have.
