The WBC is not factoring into the Current Events threads. I wonder if we, afficianados, are ignoring it and why. I have also seen relative silence along the US media outlets, espn and so forth. Is this tournament an exhibition only or are we simply interested in it as a strange anomaly with no implications whatsoever?

Even in the international section, there's not as much activity as the WBC deserves--except for the Cuban fans, who've made hundreds of posts. There's a bunch of threads, but its the same few people posting in all of them. This is really too bad; other than a few first round mercy blowouts, the games have been really good and eventful. Games involving Latin America or Korea have had a high-energy playoff atmosphere in the stands, and it's been a kick to see the different traditions, and different pitching and hitting styles of the teams. Plus there's bizarre images like last night's heated argument between monolingual Cuban manager and monolingual American ump, conducted through a translator.
Even the supposedly overpaid, spoiled American stars are really enthusiastic and are having a great time. Anyone who is ignoring this tournament is sorely cheating himself!

The WBC isnt as big here in america because it is never on at times we can see them. And the games dont count towards the teams that we root for the whole season. So we think of it as more of an all-star game not an important game so thats why it hasnt been talked about alot.

I consider Current Events about current MLB events, be it active players, or news about retired or recently-deceased players, such as Kirby Puckett. Please read Baseball Fever Policy and Forum FAQ before posting. 2007-11 CBA
Rest very peacefully, John “Buck” O'Neil (1911-2006) & Philip Francis “Scooter” Rizzuto (1917-2007)

Kirby Puckett, one of the most popular players of recent times passes on, yet Barry's still about tops in the news.
I'm thinking we should just rename Current Events to "Barrymania" or something. :oPlease read Baseball Fever Policy and Forum FAQ before posting. 2007-11 CBA

I'm a huge supporter of the WBC. I don't see how anyone who says they love to see good baseball games can't love this tournament. Most of the games have had playoff atmospheres and a high level of play.
I do believe the main problem has been lack of live tv coverage. 2 of the USA games haven't even been on live in the USA.
Also there is the conflict with the NCAA basketball and people just aren't used to watching baseball that matters in March. I don't know if you will ever be able to sell that to the American baseball public, but I know I am on board and the reaction has been mostly positive, even from the initial skeptics.

I know I was watching tongiht. Tight game, but the American team came up short.
Not a lot of people thought the US had the best team going into this, so not a shock.
I'm not convinced that not having the US advance does anything to hurt the WBC in general and interationally. There are plenty of major leaguers on the teams that are left.Visit my card site at Mike D's Baseball Card Page.

Perhaps there should be a seperate "Barry" Forum and any threads about Barry be barred from "Current Events" so those who are not interested in the Barry rubbish can enjoy the current events without him, and those who are can spend their time in the "Barry" Forum.
I think that might be the best idea I've seen all year
Condemn the Bondsophiliasts to their own forum.

I thought the international baseball thread was for discussing what's going on in other leagues around the world.
When they all come together to compete it becaomes a current event, IMO.
I really think moving these types of threads is beyond a moderator."I think about baseball when I wake up in the morning. I think about it all day and I dream about it at night. The only time I don't think about it is when I'm playing it."

Go Cuba!
I agree. This is current events in baseball. Not just MLB current events. It's baseball fever, not MLB fever. The MLB may be the definitive league. But baseball is the broader forum, I suppose.
Been a classic so far. I hope we see Roger again somewhere in the summer. I don't think he should go out like that.

Yes, it is a money making scheme
It is corrupt with all the calls going the US' way
It is interrupting Spring Training
I love wathcing Korea and Mexico play...but when they BEAT the US and the calls are that obviously skewed tomake the US make the finals it makes me sick
Professional baseball makes me sick nowadays...thank goodness for Video Games
