"I talked to the IBAF at some length last night," said Manfred just prior to Thursday's U.S.-Mexico game at Angel Stadium. "The IBAF assured me that it transmitted the banned list to the [individual baseball] federations in conformity with the World Anti-Doping Association [WADA]. The testing they conducted was up to WADA standards. I don't know what more they can do."
WADA has threatened to sanction the IBAF, saying that the World Baseball Classic's drug-testing program is too lax, the Associated Press reported on Thursday, a day after the original story appeared on ESPN.com.
The report said that the full compliment of banned drugs was not on the list sent to the players before the start of the tournament, thus creating a problem for the testers on appeal for anyone whose urine sample was deemed positive. A player could argue at that point that he wasn't aware that the offending drug was on the banned list.
The report also said that any sanctions could further damage baseball's standing in the Summer Olympics. The sport is scheduled to be played at Beijing in 2008, but was voted out of the 2012 London Olympics last year.
