  • For the love of baseball, can we stop mentioning THAT word?

Does anyone besides me not think that the whole steroid thing is being looked into too far by the fans (not MLB you understand, they need to be doing more in my opinion)? Are we not all fans of baseball here, and as such, shouldn't we be enjoying the game for what it is, and let the powers that be fix the problems?

Am I the only person here who's sick to death of reading every last thread get hijacked by '___ should have an asterisk' or '___ would have hit ___ if he had steroids like ___'?

Can we all just let the people designated to sort this out sort it out, and just go back to watching the sport we all love?

Let me ask you a question; is any kind of conversation here as to who's taken what, what should happen to them, what should become of their stats etc actually important? Does it really matter? Why do we care so much anyway? We care so much because we love baseball - so let's watch some instead of complaining and arguing about things out of our hands.

I'm not going to name names, I'm not going to point any fingers, but suffice it to say that a few BBFers have been acting in ways I'd rather not see these last couple of weeks; whether they be placing blame on a player without evidence, or ferociously defending another, they've been acting significantly out of character and I don't like it. BBF was, once upon a time, the most welcoming forum I and many others have ever been a part of. I sincerely hope that doesn't change. Let's give the steroid talk a kick in the teeth and get back to the game.

Officially boycotting all threads with steroid talk; let's focus on the good of the game.

    It is in our hands.

If it weren't in our hands, these powers that be would do absolutley nothing about the problem.

      Exactly RS53.

Why should we keep quiet about this now. That's how we got here in the first place. Without outsiders caring, baseball would have no incentive to do anything about it. It doesn't need to come up in every thread, I agree, but from reading some posters words, it's clear that the impact of steroids is being taken far too softly. Perhaps the rock this investigation should turn over, will shed some light.

I agree with Britol Boy, and I think it's the hijacking that's most irritating. Of course we should care, but EVERY thread does NOT need to include some reference to steroids. There are a lot of other things to talk about, and I think that is what Britol Boy is hoping will come about: Talk of things besides steroids.

I'll agree with BristolBoy that threads shouldn't be hijacked with supposing what certain players would've done if they'd used PEDs. I'd actually thought, when I'd read this thread title, that the word mentioned would be a name instead:

          "Barry" (you know who).

If a thread is about a ballplayer, then I think that we can discuss his capabilities, potential, if an active player, or what they could've done had they taken steroids rather than the greenies which have been used often.

On the other hand, if not for fan insistence (and resulting sports media involvement) that the drug usage scenario be closely watched, then might sponsors be as willing to question things?

I'm sure that they take polls, so if people have views that baseball and its records may be tainted by these allegations, then said sponsors may not be as enthusiastic in putting down money on something deemed less than pure. I can't say that I blame them, so if in moderation and where appropriate, I'd say that discussion of PEDs should be just fine.

As a foreign fan and not being privvy to all the media about the alleged steroid problems in baseball in USA I cannot comment about how widespread it really is but I agree wholeheartedly with BristolBoy that there is too much being said about it here, and as he says amost every thread is being hijacked with allegations and speculation about what is or what may have been.

My suggestion is to start two new forums:
The Barry Bonds Forum - to allow all those who want to hang Barry out to dry, or maybe even defend him, to talk nothing but Barry Bonds.
The Steroids (or Drugs in Baseball) Forum - to allow those who want to speculate or delve deeper into the mysteries and miseries of drugs in baseball to discuss this to their hearts content.

That way other things baseball can be discussed in relative peace without the inevitable suspicions etc.

Thought I'd quote you, since you seem to like that so much.

An excellent post. Nobody here is breaking any new ground, no one has not said anything that hasn't already been said. And the great majority of jokes being told are beyond lame. It doesn't need to be part of every thread.

During last evening's game between the Braves and Phillies, Cal Ripken Jr. was chatting it up with the fellows in the espn booth. and the pleasant conversation about all things baseball turned to the S-word. Just once I would like to watch and listen to a game without the witch hunt polluting the time, but ol' blue eyes emphasized that baseball has survived worse, will see other scandals, thrive, and endure almost in spite of some self destructive practices. I agree, and have mentioned this here before, but the one thing he failed to say was how to get a good steward of our game to take the helm, although he did hint how rudderless the past few years have seemed, compared to his early days in the game.

i think that it is not in our hands at all. not one iota.

baseball owners and the players battle it out over what the work agreement contains. have any of you guys ever been asked your opinion about what the k oughtta include? me neither.

if not for the threat by our legislature to become involved to the degree of enacting laws that would dictate drug testing, i believe that things would be (strike up talking heads) *same as it ever was*.

if fans were to stay home or something, not spend the money, then mlb would take notice. but, this is not the case. now, maybe some focus groups took place, but mlb enacted what they did without real, meaningful input from the fans.

I'm bery, bery happy to see that at least some people get what I mean. It's driving me insane that we seem to be letting all the good stuff about the game get past us.
