As a Red Sox fan, you must be thrilled with this signing

Seriously, who signs a 39 year old (turning 40 on June 2nd), coming off a season with a 91 OPS+ to be a DH? It's mind-boggling. I'd rather see 43 year old Bernie Williams get a shot. I doubt he'd do any worse.

I think they plan on platooning him. Of course, I could just as easily see this signing going the way of Nick Johnson or Jorge Posada at DH.

The thing i dont get is, is i thought they had their DH spot pretty much taken care of with Jeter, A Rod, plus Teixiera and Russell Martin could use a day out of the field every once in a while. Girardi is gonna be busy figuring out his lineups everyday, thats for sure

I think ibanez will split time between DH and being a 4th OFer with Arod and jeter getting quite a few games at DH.

Indeed Ibanez will be the DH versus RHPs and play occasionally in the OF, a good move if you ask me, considering his .747 OPS and .440 SLG vs righties last year (as opposed to his .583 OPS and .353 SLG vs LHP in '11). Can't imagine why Yankees fans would complain.

I'll venture a guess at his basic level stats this year: .262 avg, 12 HRs, 53 RBI, .712 OPS.

Who's complaining? They added a better DH than Jorge Posada was, and got rid of AJ Burnett in just a few days.

Sure, his OPS against righties is good when compared to the way he hits lefties, but .747 still seems pretty awful for a DH. He's so bad against lefties the Yankees will have to sub Andruw Jones for him if an opponent uses a lefty specialist late in a game, but how many part-time designated hitters can they really hold on their roster, especially when they have several other players who should be taking regular days off from playing the field? The Yankees should have been able to fill the DH spot with A-Rod, Jeter, Jones, and whoever might be ailing at any particular time. Why were they shopping around for a DH in the first place? Sure, they picked up something they didn't have by getting a lefty DH, but he struggles to hit right-handed pitchers better than the would-be part-time DH's who are already on their roster.

He gives an added option. Not my choice but he is an ok extra bat.

A-Rod will still get plenty of Dh time. Jeter May get some too (not sure if he will).

Question now is whether it makes more sense to add Chavez or use Laid in the last bench spot.

This is a baffling move kind of thrilled as a Rays fan one easy out lols. Why didn't they sign Johnny Damon i wonder? Methinks damon was asking a bit too much money!

The fact that he and Jones will be platooning will help both of their stat lines.

Ibanez will be an adventure in the outfield.
