I like the idea of having the Reds keep Votto but is a ten year deal really a good idea?

From a purely baseball sense, it's better than the Pujols deal by a mile. Votto is almost 4 years younger, and just as good as Albert at the moment.

Votto is currently 28 years old. If you were GM, would you offer Votto ten years? Would he be any good at age 38 in 2023? Past performance is no guarantee of future results. This is over $200 million. If this backfires, it will become a white elephant for the Cincinnati Reds.

I like the idea of extending Votto but would not go so far as to offer ten years. Five years, perhaps seven years. But not ten years.

Say good-bye to 5-year (or shorter) contracts to superstars. Superstars will now get 8-year contracts or longer.
Using a stolen chant from Boston Celtics fans whenever an L.A. team is playing up there just reeks of inferiority complex.

If hitting a baseball is the toughest thing to do in sports, then pitching must be the easiest thing to do in sports.

Until it backfires on someone. Trends are what they are, trends. Someone sets them and the rest follow, until someone gets burned. Then the trend reverses.

I don't disagree with anything that you are saying. All I said was that it's better than the Pujols deal. It's for less money and Votto is almost 4 years younger than Pujols and just as good as him.

I think the difference is, if both deals are busts, it will hurt the Reds a lot more.

This deal makes me think of Todd Helton's 9-year, $141.5MM deal back in '01. Both were 27 when they signed their contracts.

From '01 through '11, Helton hit .319/.424 /.534 and accumulated 46.7 WAR. There have been many worse long-term deals than Helton's.

Unfortunately, to keep the superstar player, you have to add the extra 2 or 3 years onto the contract in seems...

Most of these players won't be any good after the 7th year probably.
