From a purely baseball sense, it's better than the Pujols deal by a mile. Votto is almost 4 years younger, and just as good as Albert at the moment. My top 10 players:
1. Babe Ruth
2. Barry Bonds
3. Ty Cobb
4. Ted Williams
5. Willie Mays
6. Alex Rodriguez
7. Hank Aaron
8. Honus Wagner
9. Lou Gehrig
10. Mickey Mantle

I like the idea of extending Votto but would not go so far as to offer ten years. Five years, perhaps seven years. But not ten years. The Mets have the best, smartest fans in baseball.

Say good-bye to 5-year (or shorter) contracts to superstars. Superstars will now get 8-year contracts or longer.Using a stolen chant from Boston Celtics fans whenever an L.A. team is playing up there just reeks of inferiority complex.
If hitting a baseball is the toughest thing to do in sports, then pitching must be the easiest thing to do in sports.

This deal makes me think of Todd Helton's 9-year, $141.5MM deal back in '01. Both were 27 when they signed their contracts.San Francisco Giants, World Series Champions in 2010, 2012, and 2014!!!
