  • Philip Humber - perfect game!

Congrats to Humber and the Sox.

I had to tune in when they mentioned he was close on ESPN Radio; that was awesome to watch! A few pitches int he 9th reminded me of that one right before the Series clinching pitch in '88, IIRC, when Hershiser threw it to the backstop. You could tell Humber was really excited.

Has to be by far a record for fewest starts before throwing one, doesn't it? I just checked on baseball-reference.com, and last year was his first starting. Then again, one announcer mentioned coming back from Tommy John surgery so that likely explains it; the site does say it was a 3rd overall pick in 2004 so definitely has the talent.

No, someone in 1922 threw one in his 4th or 5th start. Charlie Robertson

Lee Richmond (1880) also threw one in fewer starts than Humber.

Congrats to Humber. I've seen two perfect games now. I used to say I wouldnt ever see any in my lifetime.

the hitter checked his swing on that final strike but they gave the benefit to the pitcher. Maybe the ump didnt want a repeat of the last blown perfect game. Either way congrats! I wish mlb network of fox would have tuned into the last inning!

                  Fox did.

Brendan did probably check his swing, but after seeing it a couple times, it was really close, i think he may have swung. If only they had shown a side view.

True story, the Giants game was finished relatively early west coast time so wife and I went out to enjoy a warm day and about 5 PM I said I better check the sports wires in case there was a no-hitter or something, I had a feeling somehow ... and there it was ... the perfect game

This is a pitcher who had Tommy John surgery before he reached the majors and about the only major thing he accomplished until now was the fact he was in that trade for Johan Santana.

A completely unlikely candidate for a perfect game. Good for him.

I keep watching that last strike and it really didnt look like he swung but I never saw a side view either. Regardless the ump made the right call even if he was wrong. I really thought there would be some contreversy with that last swing but I didnt hear much about it on the MLB Channel or ESPN so maybe he really did swing.

I was watching the game while at a barbecue and I didnt even notice he had a perfect game till the 8th inning. That 9th inning really made everyones day though.

You just never know with pitchers. Harvey Haddix, Dallas Braden and Armando Gallaraga would have gotten big odds against in Vegas as ever throwing a perfect game.
