  • Oil Can Boyd

I saw earlier today that Oil Can said he smoked crack during games and he didnt think Jackie Robinson was good for baseball.

His dad played in the Negroe leagues so I wonder if some of the old Negroe league players agree with him and maybe thats why Oil Can came up with this. I respect his opinion but i'm kinda surprised by it.

I think they said there gonna air the interview later this week.
"(Shoeless Joe Jackson's fall from grace is one of the real tragedies of baseball. I always thought he was more sinned against than sinning." -- Connie Mack

"I have the ultimate respect for Whitesox fans. They were as miserable as the Cubs and Redsox fans ever were but always had the good decency to keep it to themselves. And when they finally won the World Series, they celebrated without annoying every other fan in the country."--Jim Caple, ESPN (Jan. 12, 2011)

I don't think crackheads are good for baseball, but that's just me.

You gotta love that nickname, though. Best nickname of the last 50 years, anyway. I remember one year, I believe in Spring Training, a large stash of porn videos was found in Boyd's motel room. The Boston press referred to the incident as "The Can's Film Festival".
They call me Mr. Baseball. Not because of my love for the game; because of all the stitches in my head.

Wow, yeah I never heard that story. Thats pretty funny though (The Can's Film Festival) I dont usually laugh when I read anything on here but that gave me a good laugh. I gotta try to watch this interview he does.

I heard about his drug use before but I never heard about his views on Robinson until today.

It wouldn't surprise me to find out that there were Negro League players and Negro League fans who weren't excited about the integration of MLB. The acceptance of Jackie Robinson meant that the Negro Leagues were doomed and this would be loss to black communities. It probably seems counterintuitive today but not all blacks in the Negro League era were great supporters of integration.

I thought it was perhaps the most interesting and thought provoking point of the whole profile.
The most disturbing point was that Boyd admitted that he still smokes pot and does cocaine on occasion. Not cool...he seemed pretty high during the interviewed bits...and he still works in baseball with kids?

If I recall, he was his own worst enemy.Terrible temper, when angry, he was useless on the mound.

                  Sounds like Carlos Zambrano.

OK I can make a change, at times when angry he was not very effective on the mound, his temper would get the best of him.
There were articles in some mags Baseball Digest for one that spoke of possible drug use while he was playing.

At one point the Red Sox goal pre season was to get him to gain some weght, 6' 2" and just over 140 pounds. In his defense, if I recall he was very sick before the weight loss.
Roger Clemens had high praise for him, commented on all the "stuff" he had on the ball, they were pretty close.

It's pretty cut and dry...he doesn't leave leave much open to speculation.

I'm not questioning Oil Can's pitching ability but it seems like he thinks he's "cool" just because he did drugs a lot and brags about it. That is a rather unhealthy attitude. His ego is off the scale...
