  • Must have Seemed like an Eternity passed between game 2699 & 2700 at SS for Vizquel.

Omar Vizquel will retire as the all-time leader in games played at Shorstop (although Derek Jeter will overtake him early in the 2014 season if he remains healthy), but between game # 2699 and #2700 at shortstop irt must have seemed like an eternity had passed for Vizquel. White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen suddenly lost his faith in Omar's ability to play Shortstop in the later part of last season, using him only at 2B & 3B instead.. When he stopped playing Vizquel at Shortstop the all-time record games total stood at 2,699 games for Omar at shortstop. This season with Vizquel coming to Toronto, Jays manager, John Farrell kept giving regular shortstop Yuniel Escobar every opportunity to play his way out of a season-opening slump. Between August and yesterday Vizquel's teams to play roughly 70 games or more than 40% of a major league schedule in which the all-time leader in Games Played at SS failed to play a single game at the position. Finally however on May 6, in game #29 of the Jays' 2012 season, Vizquel's name was penciled into the Jays' lineup as their shortstop. Game # 2700 had finally arrived (of those 2700 games at SS, 2601 games were starts). Vizquel went 1 for 4 collecting career hit number 2843 to move one hit behind the recently retired Ivan Rodriguez.
