The substance is reported to be Clenbuterol, a stimulant used by asthma patients, that can be abused. He claims it was in a bottle of cough syrup.

Idiot. At age 38, he may have cost himself any chance of future employment beyond this season.

He should get his money back because whatever he took wasn't doing squat for him.

MLB's punishment for testing positive for PEDs is:
    1st time - 50 games
    2nd time - 100 games
    3rd time - lifetime ban

a penalty of 100 gamesis costly; losing that money is not chickenfeed.

i believe that mota's 2012 playing contract is at or near $1,000,000 for the season.
if so his earnings will drop by approximately $617,000.
    that's a lotta snap.

For all we know, it may have been. Mota probably won't reach the stage where he even questions that.

Mota has made something like $17.2M for pitching 850 or so innings. Maybe he wasn't so dumb after all.

    Unbelievable.

But if he served 50 games the first time, I can't help but wonder why the second time is only 100 games. Imho, the punishment should be more harsh than simply double the original. One would think MLB would take this a bit more seriously than that.

100 game suspension for Guillermo Mota

Not too often are players dumb enough to get caught TWICE.

LOS ANGELES — Right-hander Guillermo Mota was suspended 100 games by Major League Baseball for testing positive for Clenbuterol, a performance-enhancing drug.

Mota, 38, served a 50-game suspension in 2007 while pitching for the New York Mets. He is the third player to be penalized twice under the Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
