I think having more teams is a major reason. It's harder to lead the lead in BA-HR-RBI when there are 16 teams in a league rather 8-10 teams. There are simply more hitters to beat out. I think Carl Yastrzemski and Frank Robinson had a bit a luck in that they played in the 1960's when batting averages dropped. Yaz won his Triple Crown hitting just .326. Robinson hit even lower at .316. Only one other Triple Crown winner was under a .353 BA. A .316/.326 BA will not likely win a batting title today.

    BA
    Konerko .395
    Hamilton .368
    Jeter .335
    Trumbo .333
    Jackson .331

    HR
    Hamilton 20
    Dunn 16
    Encarnacion 16
    Granderson 15
    Reddick 14

    RBI
    Hamilton 53
    Encarnacion 41
    Cabrera 40
    Dunn 37
    Cruz 33

Josh still has a healthy lead in HR and RBI but his batting average has been falling and he is now in 2nd place behind Konerko.

Longoria? Really? The guy with the .276 lifetime batting average?

He has a shot to lead in average, but Dunn is gonna pass him in home runs. Cabrera is gonna get hot as well and be serious competition.

That it is, way to early.

It might be a bit early to speculate on now, but it's fun and Hamilton has as good a shot as anyone. It'd be nice to see it done. Odds are long, but he's got a shot.

Batting average is pretty fickel this time of the year. An 0-15 stint and he is down to .364. He should be leading all three in a month, but one slump or injury can change that
