  • Yankees To Be Put On The Market?

There is a sudden buzz in all the major media outlets about how NY sports and finance people have been whispering for a few weeks that the current Yankee owners are looking into the prospect of selling the team.
If true, is this a good or bad development for the team? I've had lots of rotten things to say about Steinbrenner and sons over the years, but there have also been some great Yankee teams over those years. Who might step in to bid for the team? Cuban? Bloomberg? Zuckerberg?

    Not.

    According to Randy Levine:

"I can say to you there is absolutely, positively nothing to this. The Steinbrenners are not selling the team."

    from Hal Steinbrenner:

"I just learned of the Daily News story. It is pure fiction. The Yankees are not for sale. I expect that the Yankees will be in my family for many years to come."

Sorry I don't have a lin to the story with the quotes. They are from mlb.com via At Bat on my phone.

That would be the biggest mistake ever to sell that team.

No, it wouldn't. Did you see what the Dodgers garnered at market value? Think of what the Yankees will get on the market.

Why would it be a mistake? I'm sure they would get a pretty penny.

In 2008 Microsoft offered to buy Yahoo for $44.6 Billion. Yahoo rejected the bid, claiming that it "substantially undervalues" Yahoo and was not in the interest of its shareholders. Yahoo thought it would be a mistake to sell and now, just a few years later, Yahoo is worth less than one-third of the amount they rejected from Microsoft.

If George's sons aren't sentimental about keeping the Yankees in the family, it would not be a "mistake" to sell the team if they can get above market value for it.

If a team like the dodgers (no offense intended) can get two billions the yanks must be worth at least 5 billions.

Everything is for sale. Nobody thought the Dodgers would sell for 2 billion. If someone came along and offered 5 or 6 billion for the Yankees, that may be an offer they can't refuse.

Precisely. Hal and Hank Steinbrenner would be foolish to not wonder what they could get. They don't necessarily need to be selling, but they have the luxury to think about it. It is quite possible, with aging stars, bad contracts and a lot of other teams prepared to contend, this may be the peak opportunity to sell. I don't think they will, but the Dodgers sale had to hae triggered something.

In my honest oppinion why sell something that is making you so bloody rich year after year..... I understand they would get a lot for the team but they would probably make more in the long run by keeping said team IMHO.

Given that George loved the Yankees and that these are his kids, I have doubt that they are concerned what the Yankees are worth.

                    1) they are already so rich that the extra cash is meaningless
                    2) they are ONLY rich because their dad left that to them
                    3) their dad loved the team
                    4) presumably they loved their dad

This is one of those situations where the word "priceless" comes to mind.

I remember seeing some estimates of the Steinbrenner fortune after George died, and nearly the entire estate is tied up in the Yankees. Other assets, including the horse stables, made up something like 5% of the total value of the estate. If George had died a year earlier when there was still an estate tax in place, his kids would have been forced to sell the team (or at least a huge chunk of it) just to cover the tax.
