    Pitiful

worst record in majors and current 11 game losing streak

longest win steak this year is a pitiful 2 games

12 winning seasons in last 40 years. 30 of the 40 years finished in the lower half of their division (above .500 in 1995 and at .500 in 1977 but finished 3/5 and 4/6

no pennant since 1945 and even that is tarnished - a watered down league war pennant

    no world championship since 1908

all time post season series record 3-14, since 1909 1-13

is there a worse franchise in sports?

wrigley field despite its history and age is an old out dated ballaprk, outdated about 60 years ago

I won't say anything about the Cubs on-field performance this year. We all knew they were going to be terrible, everybody here knows how I feel about this. Plus, if the Cubs are in the NL Central basement, then the Brewers are knocking on the basement door. But, I will comment on Wrigley Field.

Despite its character and history, it has not been well maintained. Quite frankly, the place is a garbage dump, ash tray and urinal rolled into one, and it smells like it. I have never been to Fenway, but friends of mine tell me that Fenway has been better maintained than Wrigley over the years.

The Cubs need to either build a new ballpark at the current spot where Wrigley is, or do a serious renovation/overall (like Lambeau Field circa 2003). Either way, they'll probably be spending a season or two playing home games at The Cell.

That's what I would suggest to the Ricketts, if they asked. If the ownership wants to do this, who knows. The fans would balk and moan over the end of old Wrigley, but they'll get over it.

Wrigely is supposed to go under renovations in 2014. Not sure if it will be OYS style where the place will have to be closed during the renovation or if it will more like Fenway where it's a continuous renovation and everything is done when there is nothing going on there.

IMO, the problem over several decades has been complacency within the dugout and locker room once it sets in each year that the team will end up with another losing record. The question decades ago was whether this poor play, and complacency, was due to playing so many games in the daytime heat while the other teams played at night in cooler weather. I still suspect this is how the momentum for year-in and year-out losing began.

Since 1988 and playing under the lights more often, the team has been better over some seasons. And yet, the team hasn't been better often enough to say that the blame was to be placed on summer heat.

Something else is out of place within owners/GM decision making over who they sign as free agents, and whether they should go after free agents at all. Because they have a big market revenue stream, the Cubs should build the best minor league system going. I see no excuse for ownership when they have chosen not to do this.

I'm one Cub fan who wouldn't mind an upgrade over Wrigley. It's a great ballpark, but it's had its day.

Theo Epstein and Co. have said they're focused on developing a strong minor league system. Hopefully they'll do a good job of it.

            Seattle Mariners?

Have the worst record in the AL West and are 9 games back.

Have had two 4-game winning streaks, but also two 4-game losing streaks, and a 7-game losing streak.

11 winning seasons in last 35 years. 28 of the 35 years finished in the lower half of their division (above .500 in 1991, 1993, 2002, 2009, but still 3rd or worse)

            No pennant. Period.

            No world championship. Period.

All time post season series record 3-4, with a record of 15-17 in postseason play.

            Consistently living in the past:
2005: "Tenth Anniversary of the 1995 Season"
2011: "Tenth Anniversary of the 2001 Season"
2012: "35th Anniversary of the Franchise" (They have a former Mariner throwing out the first pitch every game)
-- They signed Mike Cameron to a one-day contract so he could retire as a Mariner - and had him throw out the home opener's first pitch

Safeco Field is consistently rated as one of the top ballparks in the country... so at least we have that.
Swing and a drive! This one is deep! This one is... over the fence and into the neighbor's yard!

Make it 12! Bucs had a rare offensive outburst in a 10-4 win today.

I still give the LA Clippers the "worst franchise in pro sports" moniker. Yeah they've gotten better, but their owner makes most other owners look real good by comparison. Google "Donald Sterling blunders" and see for yourself.

Every team should look back at their history at every 25 year interval. It seems odd the M's would have such a big celebration for their 35 year anniversary. I was disappointed the Bucs didn't make more of a deal about their 125th anniversary (other than a 2 minute video and t-shirts) but their recent history hasn't been much to write home about, but at least they have a nice park to play in.
              LETS GO BUCS!!

Your Bucs were able to vault past Houston into 3rd by sweeping the Cubs. They might be on a roll. Maybe. :crossfingers:

Would anyone agree that the recent swoon of the Cubs could be related to the retirement of Kerry Wood? I realize he wasn't an integral part of the roster or pitching staff, but it may have deflated the spirit of the clubhouse looking back in hindsight.

Well, we're set to sweep the Padres today.
My guess is we've bottomed out and it gets better from here. That's not saying much but I see it as this is just going to be one of those threads that'll be a hoot to bring back up 3 or 4 years from now.
At the least; we're finding out who the real fans are.

                        In today's Brad Dickson column:

"The Chicago Cubs broke a 12-game losing streak. Cubs fans are withholding comment until they can find the appropriate curse to blame the 12 losses on."

currently a lot of people/columnists seem to be blaming the Cubs problems on Wrigley Field...a lot of people calling for tearing down the "dump" of a field...constant day games zapping energy from the team as well...I just see it as a long problem with drafting well, holding on to those picks, having a quality farm system, and not spending money frivilously (ie Soriano - cannot stand him) On a side note, anyone see Soriano run the bases on his home run yesterday? Guy practically needs a wheel chair at this point to get around

I think the Cubs have a lot of problems. Some of them run deep and some of them are easier solutions. None of it is easy..

--I think they have a bit of a jealousy problem. Whether it's in Chicago (White Sox, Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls) or whether it's in the division (Cardinals, Brewers). From a Cardinals fan perspective, you would think the Cubs had finally won the World Series when they simply beat the Cardinals. Facebook blows up with Cubs comments, etc. And I know that's part of being a fan, whatever, but I think the Cubs and their fans have taken it beyond any other.

--Wrigley Field. I've never been there, but I know there is some history there. I guess the question you could is Is it good history or is it bad history? It's obviously a landmark but is it time for an upgrade? Could that be affecting the performance of the team? Is the clubhouse, the weight room, athletic training room, etc negatively affecting the team and its ability to perform?

--Free agency signings that haven't worked out for them. They've had a few and you all know plenty of names I'm sure.

What is their coaching like? At the Major League level? At the Minor League level?

I'd love to see the Cubs get better because it would help make the Central Division stronger and it would make the Cardinals-Cubs rivalry more important....
