  • Magglio Ordonez to announce retirement Sun. at Comerica Park

    Hall off Fame stats?
career .309 hitter with 294 home runs and 1,236 RBIs over 15 seasons

    He's really on the cusp

A very good player for sure, but not HOF worthy, IMO. I'd put someone like Brian Giles in way before I would put in Magglio.

Why Giles? Mags has better numbers all around and was more valuable to his team. Not to diminish Giles, but I don't see him as above Ordonez

Thats not saying Mags definitely belongs. I still say he's on the cusp and yes or no arguments both are valid.

Giels was the slightly better hitter.

          Brian Giles
          .291/.400/.502, 136 OPS+, 48.4 WAR

          Maglio Ordonez
          .309/.369/.502, 125 OPS+, 34.6 WAR
Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.-Crash Davis

Magglio Ordonez. A consistently good, and somewhat underrated, hitter, but was never really one as one of the top 15-20 players in the game at any time (except for his monster 2007 season).

Just for fun I ran a Baseball-Reference Play Index search of players with at least a .309 batting average and at least 294 home runs and surprisingly (to me) only 18 players including Magglio Ordonez have done both. But to be fair, it's a major a cherry pick since Maggs is at the bottom end of both stats.

              .309 BA and 294 HR

              Babe Ruth
              Manny Ramirez
              Jimmie Foxx
              Ted Williams
              Lou Gehrig
              Stan Musial
              Albert Pujols
              Vlad Guerrero
              Larry Walker
              Joe Dimaggio
              Johnny Mize
              Todd Helton
              Hank Greenberg
              Edgar Martinez
              Al Simmons
              Rogers Hornsby
              Chuck Klein
              Magglio Ordonez
