Today I tried listening the Indians/Cardinals game on XM and had to change the channel. Mike Shannon may be the worst play by play announcer that I've ever heard. He made Herb Score sound like Red Barber.

^ The last time I listened to them, they alternated PBP and color commentary work. Meaning, for a few innings Mike would announce and Rooney would do color, then they'd trade.It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion. As we've discussed before, announcers can be an acquired taste. Shannon is in his 41st year on the air with the Cardinals after playing for them, so he's part of the fabric of the place. I think Cardinal fans are entitled to better after more than half a century of Harry Caray and Jack Buck, but ....
That said, a story I've shared elsewhere. One day, the Dodgers were the backup Game of the Week on a doubleheader day, and NBC used Phil Stone and Shannon. I had to be out. When I got home, my mother said she wanted to talk with me. Now, my mother had grown up with Red Barber, always said that if I liked the student, I should remember that the professor came first, and so Vin was great, and that I underrated Jerry Doggett, which I did. But she had really disliked Ross Porter when he came in. She said, "I just listened to these guys," and had written down their names. Then she said, "I will never criticize Ross ever again." And she never did. It took Stone and Shannon to calm her down.Comment

I one time listed to about 5-7 minutes of a broadcast, thinking it was Shannon time-filling for a rain delay, but it ended up being the middle of an inning.

I feel the same way. Harrelson has been the voice of the White Sox for around 30 years, and as much as I've cringed and bitched while listening to him, now that I don't hear him anymore, I kind of miss him.Originally posted by Matthew C.
