    Perfect? Of course not.
    Extremely reliable? Questionable.
Better than W-L record or ERA without any context (defensive support, park, run support, playing time (IP), bullpen support, the run environment of the era, etc.) Of course.

I wouldn't say it is better or worse for pitchers. Not only do you still have the defensive component to weed through in BBRs version, but a lot of people use FGs, which only considers the FIP (HR's, BB's, and K's) of the pitcher. So methodology and philosophy of the two WARs varies even more regarding pitchers.

If quantifying defense accurately is the Holy Grail of sabermetrics, than crediting pitchers and their fielders for runs prevented on balls in play accurately is like finding Noah's Ark.

I think it's maybe even a better stat for pitchers. since pitching is about wins anyway determining how many more wins than average (or replacement level) a pitcher gets is a very good metric.

I would even think that pitching WAR is more precise than position WAR.
