  • All-Star Game draws record-low ratings... again

6.8 rating, down from 6.9 last year (a then record-low)

Part of it might be because of the blowout 8-0 score, which caused many fans to turn away early.

    Here's a yearly chart: http://www.baseball-almanac.com/asgbox/asgtv.shtml

The game drew 20.0 in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and it drew in the mid-teens in the 1990s.

On current pace, it will be drawing less than a regular-season game by 2020.

Could be because the All-Star game is now being swamped by a slew of no-names. Jose Altuve? Really?

NO,actually the tv ratings at the beginning were higher then last year
from the first pitch to the 6th inining when R.A. Dickey came in
then PEAK for the whole inning that he pitch
          then sank after that

In fairness, ratings have been on a steady declining trend of 30+ years - its not a new issue. Not surprisingly, the downward trend began with the introduction of cable television. Coincidence?

Maybe, but there were a lot more big stars in the 90's than the late 70's, but the 70's ratings were much better. I think it is one of many issues.

Nobody outside of NY or very big baseball fans know who the heck RA Dickey is.

I blame Joe Buck and Tim McCarver.

But hey, at least MLB ASG's ratings are higher than the Pro Bowl's, right?

EDIT: Or are they? 2012 Pro Bowl drew 7.9. Damn, baseball is really sinking.

Using a stolen chant from Boston Celtics fans whenever an L.A. team is playing up there just reeks of inferiority complex.

If hitting a baseball is the toughest thing to do in sports, then pitching must be the easiest thing to do in sports.

Honestly? I watched it up until price pitched and then after that turned on something else and then i tuned in, in the 9th and saw Rodney pitch and then went to something else.

Very true. I am a Senior Research Analyst working in the HQ for the largest privately owned Cable company in North America... Needless to say, it's quite the paradox we started. We are segmenting our own audience with dozens of Networks, then further losing viewing share to the Internet and Mobile Devices...

At least commissioner Goodell is willing to entertain the notion of cancelling the pro bowl outright. Selig seems determined to some how find a way to bring a dead horse back to life.

If baseball is as money-hungry as we think they are, the game would be dead because they wouldn't waste their resources on something that pulls such bad ratings. What keeps it alive?
