How is he still umpiring major league games?

Just watched him call Valdespin out at first. On replay Valdespin was on the base and the ball wasn't even in the picture yet. It had to be two feet from the 1B glove.

He misses calls like this more than any ump I see regularly.

Never mind, this whole crew is incompetent.

Missed the trap, then reversed, but ignored that Davis tagged a guy off the base. And now runs for the Braves. What a joke.

Umpiring as a whole is horrible these days. It's a big part of what is killing baseball.

Don't worry, the "bad" Hanson showed up today.

I wonder... has it always been this bad, and we only think it's worse because of the Internet?

Just seems there are a handful (like Bucknor) of truly imcompetents who regularly affect games in a bad way.

I remember back to not long after the Jim Joyce blown call in Gallaraga's perfect game, there was a player poll shown on ESPN ranking the best and worst umpires.

CB Bucknor: #1 on the worst list

He's been bad since he got to the majors. WHY is he still around.

I have to ask the same question as SamtheBravesFan asked: has the umpiring always been this way? It sure seems to be a frequent topic of conversation, and not just here on BBF. Baseball Tonight; MLB Tonight; all the shows have talked about the poor umpiring this year.

And the worst ones are also the ones who are confrontational at the drop of a hat... yes Bob Davidson, I'm lookin' at you!

Well apparently there IS a rule where umps can say "never mind" runner safe and everybody please advance even if you've been tagged.

Yep, saw it in Cardinals-Royals game a few weeks ago. Triple play called and then reversed.. Matheny got ejected for that one.

Yes, though I don't agree its all that bad. Umpires get the vast majority of calls correct, but they do make mistakes. Some of them more egregious than others, but they do get most of them right. The difference between now and say 50 years ago is television and instant replay.

I agree with this. I've heard family members talk about how much better umpiring was back say in the 50's. I tend to doubt it. Not only are there more cameras today in each park, but IR comes up within seconds with multiple angles to look at. 50 years ago, by the time an IR would be ready, the rest of the inning was practically played out.

My issue with umpires (a select few) are the ones who want to be part of the game. The best are the ones that simply are part of the background and keep the flow moving. Guys like Bucknor & West seem to want to be part of the action.

I really felt bad for Jim Joyce when he blew the call on Galarraga's PG a couple years ago. His interviews after the game really seemed genuine. I'm not so sure the same would have come out of Cowboy's mouth - he'd probably toss the reporter that asked the question.
