Bad umpires estimate badly more often. They should be replaced.

Well, at least the two that were called strikes were the ones that were closest to the strike zone. They were each within the width of the pocket of a catchers mitt from the strike zone, so they definitely aren't the worst called strikes I've ever seen. Joyce probably didn't help things by swinging and making contact with a pitch that was further outside than the ones he ended up taking for called strikes later in the at bat. Just as the pitcher and catcher can use subtle techniques to expand the strike zone, a hitter can end up expanding the strike zone on himself by swinging at pitches out of the zone. I'm not saying the umpire chose to make his strike zone variable, but if Joyce swung at a pitch that was 6 inches outside and a later pitch is 3 inches outside and the umpire is set up on the inside part of the plate and can't see whether a pitch hit the outside edge of the plate or not, he's susceptible to calling those strikes just because it looked a lot closer to a strike than the one the batter swung at. Umpires have to estimate things sometimes, and sometimes (like this at bat) they are off.

Umm.. if any of those pitches above were called strikes, that's an awful at-bat for the umpire.. good job by the pitcher and catcher though!

The PitchFX data on the strikeout shows the last two pitches of the at bat as outside by a couple inches. Bad calls for sure, but I've seen worse.

That's the garbage crew from the Mets-Braves series I was talking about in the CB Bucknor thread.

Watched the clip of Maddon being tossed. Announcers were basically saying that Iassogna was bad for both teams.
He was horrid but he gave the Tribe extra outs......
