  • What is wrong with the Mets bullpen?

This is deeply frustrating but what is wrong with the Mets bullpen?

With the loss of Jose Reyes and constraints on team payroll, Mets GM Sandy Alderson has spent his remaining resources on improving the team's bullpen through trades and signings. Jon Rauch, Frank Francisco, Ramon Ramirez and extending Tim Byrdak were his solutions.

Since the All-star break, Ramon Ramirez, acquired by the Mets from the Giants for Angel Pagan, gave up five runs yesterday against the Dodgers.
Pedro Beato gave up another bunch of runs to Washington at home with Washington scoring six runs in the top of the tenth tonight.
The bullpen has also shed numerous runs in other games since the All-star break. Pedro Beato lost a game in Washington on a bases-loaded wild pitch last week.

    Pedro Beato: 10.38 ERA/1.62 WHIP
    Frank Francisco: 4.97 ERA/1.59 WHIP
    Bobby Parnell: 3.10 ERA/1.28 WHIP
    Ramon Ramirez: 4.58 ERA/1.58 WHIP

    Factors:
    - Injuries to pitchers
    - Poor Mets defense/lack of range behind the pitchers; Daniel Murphy has a -8.0 UZR at second base
    - My theory: bad game calling skills by catcher Josh Thole

My question goes out to the larger community outside of the Mets fans:
What is wrong with the Mets bullpen?

As to the OP's question, what's wrong is the bullpen stinks. This Beato that blew it tonight also let in a run with a wild pitch last week, then blamed it on Josh Thole. I'm betting after tonight, he's gone.

Pedro Beato has been demoted and the Mets call up Manny Acosta.

This season Manny Acosta has an ERA of 11.86 and WHIP of 2.27.

The problem? Well, they are using their top starter as a reliever too, which leads to nowhere good

Cap, you make it sound as if they're doing that on a regular basis. They're not. It was the first time. On top of which, Saturday was Dickey's throw day. He pitched no differently from what he would have normally done out in the bullpen. In other words, it's hardly the problem.
              Put it in the books.

Ah, yes, I remember the days when there was a debate among us Braves fans on whether Acosta would blossom or flame out with the Mets.

Seriously, though, it's too bad he stinks right now.

Acosta pitched well against the Braves last season when the Mets used him as a closer.

But I don't know how his ERA ballooned by eight runs and WHIP now over two.

How the heck does one guy go from 4-1 with a 3.45 ERA and 1.383 WHIP in 2011 to 1-2 with an 11.86 ERA and 2.273 WHIP?

The point is you are getting a pitcher out of his routine...pitching for practice is not the same as a real game

Did Dan Warthen call pitches from the bench?

Not sure who it was, but byrdek did not want to throw the pitch, shook it off twice, threw the pitch he didnt want and gave up a homer

Byrdak apologized to Thole when he learned the pitch was called form the bench, then had it out with the pitching coach Warthen over the pitch selection.
