  • Hamels Extended in Philly

    6 yrs. $144 mill.

I watched the kid pitch in high school, so it's fun to watch him be successful.

I was going to say it was just a minute ago there were doubts about his makeup, etc. But that was more of a 2009 discussion, not as recent as I remember. Time flies.

JM: Only did that for a couple of years and then we had a conspiracy so it kind of turned me sour. Our league's commissioner, Lew Ford(notes) at the time, was doing some shady things that ... I'd rather not talk about [laughs].
DB: Isn't he in Japan right now?
JM: I don't know where Lou is right now. He's probably fleeing the authorities [laughs].

I think what happened to Cole in '09 was something like the "Verducci Effect". He didn't get injured, but he certainly showed dead arm after throwing 260 inning the previous season.

True, they were all-in for 2008.

Lefties... he gets more than Doc. I suppose Clemens in his later years was paid great sums, per start. Pedro got paid quite well, but chump change compared to this.

Detroit locked up Verlander at a good time, 2010.

Cole had issues throwing strikes last night. Hard to keep balanced with all that cash in his pockets.

This is great. I didn't think he was coming back. I would much rather have Cole than Cliff or Roy.

"No matter how great you were once upon a time — the years go by, and men forget,” - W. A. Phelon in Baseball Magazine in 1915. “Ross Barnes, forty years ago, was as great as Cobb or Wagner ever dared to be. Had scores been kept then as now, he would have seemed incomparably marvelous.”

Still the Phillies are tying up a lot of money to a couple of players, which might leave the rest of the team lacking. Though, I do believe they might try to move Cliff Lee in light of this extension.

My guess is Victorino will be moved. I don't think his whining about being dropped down in the batting order sat too well with the PTB.
