  • Vizquel Must Retire

As sad as it is that Omar Vizquel is only 140 or so hits from 3,000, it's clear now that it's just not going to happen for him. And he needs to retire. Vizquel has only two extra-base hits in his last 181 ABs. That's correct. He had a pair of doubles last summer and hasn't had an extra-base hit in any of his 88 ABs this season. His batting average and slugging percentage are exactly the same: .205. The guy has 11 Gold Gloves and nearly 3,000 hits. If that's not enough to get him into the Hall of Fame, there's nothing he's going to do between now and his 46th birthday next spring that's going to change in a positive way how Hall of Fame voters view him.

I guess his value would be as a defensive replacement maybe. I would think he knows he's not getting 3000 hits.

Since he started playing for Seattle, I have finished middle school, finished high school, earned 2 college degrees, moved from coast to coast and bought a house. It's crazy to think how long he's been playing.

Why shouldn't the guy keep playing if somebody is willing to pay him and he wants to do it?

He's already announced he will retire at the end of the season. Are you in some rush to get him off the field? Show some respect.

Perhaps the title is misleading. I just wanted to call attention to how poorly he's doing right now. I don't dislike him and I doubt very much that he feels some random person on a message board is being disrespectful. I'm just amazed that a team is willing to pay him. If he still has good range, perhaps he makes a nice defensive option for later innings and groundball pitchers. But surely he's not as quick and agile as he was in his prime. I just hate to see a guy end a career like this. And I had high hopes that he would reach 3,000 hits.

I think most ML players love the lifestyle and accolades and have a hard time leaving it behind. They'll talk about how much they miss their families and how bad the grind is, but then stick around as long as they possibly can. It's obviously good money, but I don't think that's the only thing making guys play longer than they "should".

If Ozzie Smith made it, Vizquel should be a HOFer.
Using a stolen chant from Boston Celtics fans whenever an L.A. team is playing up there just reeks of inferiority complex.

If hitting a baseball is the toughest thing to do in sports, then pitching must be the easiest thing to do in sports.

Agreed, Vizquel is Ozzie Smith without the backflips.

Vizquel is still a borderline HOFer. he was a great defender but not quite as great as ozzie.

                        ozzie Omar

                        TZ 239 134

both are not good hitters but the hits will help of course. 3000 would make him a lock so he hopes to somehow creep to that line even it is highly unlikely.

with 2900 or so he could stay out or not. I think he doesn't quite deserve but he is close and I believe he has a good chance. this is because any power hitter with more than 400 HRs is suspect for cheating in these days. so voters might vote for him over more deserving guys because they believe he was clean and they might be not.

BTW he hit a double yesterday

Thats kinda strange that since the thread starter started this thread he now has two extra basehits. The Whitesox need a decent utility guy maybe he'll end up back with em.

It's sorta like everytime I post something negative pertaining to Clint Barmes he does something positive. Maybe I should dog him everyday....hmmm?
