Trade: Marco Scutaro to the Giants, Culberson to the Rockies

The Giants have acquired infielder Marco Scutaro and cash considerations from the Rockies in exchange for minor league second baseman Charlie Culberson. The money will help pay a portion of the approximately $2.2MM that Scutaro is owed for the rest of the season. According to MLBTR's Transaction Tracker, this is the first time since 2006 that the two NL West rivals have been trade partners.

A 36-year old hitting .271 / .684 OPS isn't too terrible. But he's only .238 / .570 OPS away from Coors this year. Then again, Culberson isn't a steep price.

The Giants are severly hampered

Pablo looks like he is going on the DL, their back-up catcher who is a pretty good hitter (they move Posey to first in most games Sanchez catches) is also injured

They had to bring up Whiteside as a backup C - he can't hit, Belt at 1B despite 3 hits last night has been in a terrible slump, Theriot at 2B and Crawford at SS are decent but losing Pablo at 3B and having to plug in Arias (Arias was platooning at SS with Crawford) just isn't getting it done

after hot stretches both Pagan in CF and Blanco in RF have cooled off considerably and that leaves Posey and Cabrera (and to a lesser extent Theriot) as the only guys producing offense, losing Sandoval is a bigger blow than most realize

last night's game was good baseball but a little frustrating, the Dodgers twice had two outs and no one on and scored 2 runs each inning - once with the pitcher up as the batter with 2 out and no one on and again in the 10th when Romo did not get the call on a 3-2 pitch to Ethier then Hanley R hit a rare HR off Romo to basically win the game

but several times the Giants had 2 on and no out and did not score

Huff has been activated from the DL, but he wasn't doing anything when he was healthy.

Excellent analysis Hobbs. The Giants offense is pretty much Cabera, Posey, and Sandoval. Losing Sandoval is a huge blow. The rest of the hitters are not really doing much recently. And there really is no help in the minors either. Gary Brown is not ready. Roger Keischnick looked like the real deal in April/May but suffered a broken shoulder bone in late May. I think he may be out the rest of the season.

Scutaro is a good addition, and as noted, Culberson was not a steep price. He may have a career as a utility guy, but I doubt his ability to be an everyday ML'er. This will give the Giants options when Sandoval returns.
