  • Giants acquire Jose Mijares from Royals....for nothing.

A 2.56 ERA in 51 games for 27-year old left-hander and KC just lets San Francisco have him for nothing on a waiver claim. Baffling.

I've said it before (six years ago), and I'll say it again for as long as it takes. Save the Royals!!

Ah yes, Jose; was kind of a Dennys Reyes 2.0 here in Minnesota (although not quite as good as Reyes in getting the trademark one-pitch inning), a left-handed specialist more or less as opposed to an innings eater. We used to call him "Monster Den". He's a fine pitcher, not great, but certainly a guy any team wouldn't mind at all having (of course, time changes a man; he could be much improved).

But come on, for NOTHING?! They could have at least gotten a nice steak dinner for him...

He's got a career 3.04 ERA in 237 lifetime appearances and he'll give the Giants to use Jeremy Affeldt in a more expanded role with Santiago Casilla struggling as closer.

I think he will do well in SF. the west division is a pitchers division (parks, teams). good acquisition for nothing even if he is just a lefty specialist.

colorado and arizona are not pitchers parks / teams

            SD LA and SF yes
            1. The more I learn, the more convinced I am that many players are over-rated due to inflated stats from offensive home parks (and eras)

Yeah, he was a waiver claim which by definition cannot be a bad move. As for trading you don't get much for a guy who might be available to pitch 20 innings through the rest of the season. Royals have relief pitchers out the wazoo.

An inexpensive, 27-year old left-hander, who is under team control through next season?

I would just like to reiterate that Monster Den is far from a bad pitcher; as I said previously, nobody would feel bad about having him on the team. He's not like a liability or anything, but he's also not a guy you perk up for like Glen Perkins, for example (pun 100% intended), or Joe Nathan, or Pat Neshek, or to name a non-Twin, Joakim Soria, when he comes out to the mound. His best role would be to increase the value of other LHP by taking slots where they are currently pitching that are of less value, and he's apparently doing exactly that, so, yeah. Good move for Sabean, regardless of the fact that they didn't even have to pay for a nice steak dinner for him.
