  • 2012 NL Rookie of the Year

Who are the main contenders for the ROY this year? Bryce Harper gets all the attention, but he is certainly not the best among the field. Most of Todd Frazier's stats are better than Harper's, and I'm sure there are other rooks that I haven't heard of that are having better seasons. Educate me.

I'd say Wade Miley is leading the pack in the NL.

I didn't think Miley was a candidate. I guess he would be though after checking.

It's a bit of slim field, at least in the NL. Mike Fiers of Milwaukee could sneak in there if he keeps pitching as well as he has, but he's only got 12 starts and 78 IP. Norichika Aoki is among the top hitting rookies, which isn't saying a lot.

Can't think of any position players. Miley would have to be the favorite. Does Lance Lynn of the Cards qualify after 18 appearances, 34 innings last year? That could be too much. This year, though, his record is 13-4, 3.40.

I'm going to guess he had more than 45 days on the active roster during the 25-man period, and thus no, is not a rookie, as I've not heard him mentioned in ROY talks and ESPN doesn't have him listed as a rookie.

              I would agree.

I'm looking at Frazier's 2011 and wonder how many eligible days he was on the active roster. I'm counting 40 something, but I can't pinpoint an exact number.

Frazier's teammate Zack Cozart could be a contender.

Norichika Aoki is really the only other player who could compete with Miley.

I wouldn't count out Bryce Harper yet. I don't think it's too big of a stretch to say he has a chance to go 20-20.
                  My top 10 players:

                  1. Babe Ruth
                  2. Barry Bonds
                  3. Ty Cobb
                  4. Ted Williams
                  5. Willie Mays
                  6. Alex Rodriguez
                  7. Hank Aaron
                  8. Honus Wagner
                  9. Lou Gehrig
                  10. Mickey Mantle

Not unless he significantly picks it up. He's batting just .213/.282/.310 in his last 48 games.

Thats true, but Chris Young in 2007 nearly went 30-30 and only finished fourth.

Granted, he was up against Troy Tulowitzki and Ryan Braun, but still.

Harper looked like he had it in the bag after 40 games. The last 49 he looks like this....

                        200 AB, 29 R, 42 H, 8 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 11 RBI, 21 BB, 50 SO, 9 SB, 1 CS, .210 AVG, .285 OBP, .305 SLG, .590 OPS

Norichika Aoki, Wade Miley, and Yonder Alonso are the only ones worth mentioning.

If Rizzo keeps hitting like he did in July he'd be a worthy candidate.
