  • Only 4 BoSox players attend J. Pesky's funeral

The late Johnny Pesky gave his life to his beloved Boston Red Sox [team stats], but, sadly, it appears only four current players made time to attend the Fenway icon’s funeral.

Word from Yawkey Way is that the Sox front office hired buses to bring players, office and staff to the funeral from the ballpark to the church. The suits, we hear, were surprised and disappointed when the vast majority of the 40 players on the roster didn’t bother to show up for the services.

“We ordered the buses for the front office to go, knowing that any players could join us or drive separately from their homes,” Sox spokesman Charles Steinberg told the Track. “Between the ownership, front office, current players and staff, and former players, we were well represented by the people who knew Johnny best.”

The only players the Herald observed at the funeral at St. John The Evangelist Church in Swampscott were designated hitter David Ortiz [stats], pitchers Clay Buchholz and Vincente Padilla and catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

By contrast, that same night, nearly the entire team turned out for pitcher Josh Beckett [stats]’s annual Beckett Bowl and country music show at Lucky Strike Lanes and the House of Blues.

“The front office was not happy,” said Someone Who Knows.

Pesky, a Fenway fixture for 60 years, was described as the “heart, soul and spirit of the organization” by Sox prez Larry Lucchino.

Lucchino, owner John Henry and his wife, Linda, Sox CEO Sam Kennedy, GM Ben Cherington and many more team execs and staff were on hand to bid Pesky a final farewell. Also in the pews were former players like Nomar Garciaparra, who made the trip from California for the funeral and was visibly upset during the ceremony; Jim Rice, Bill Lee, Jerry Moses and Mike Andrews.

The current squad also missed Pesky’s wake this past Saturday because they were in New York for a game with the Yankees. But legendary dirt dog Trot Nixon was there and he gave an off-the-cuff eulogy for Johnny to the Herald that is bittersweet in light of the funeral snub.

“I look back and it’s not just him being on the field and hitting ground balls, but how he carried himself and how much he cared for all the ballplayers, whether you were at the major league level or in the minor league level,” Nixon said. “Everybody that worked in the organization, from the highest level down to guys working in the clubhouse, he generally cared for everyone and loved the game of baseball. He was a fantastic ambassador. I loved Johnny.”

Thats pretty bad only four showed up yet they went to Josh Beckets bowling party. Thats a slap in the face to the city of Boston for only four players to show up. This current roster apparently must be pretty self centered to pull something like that.

      Wow, that's really terrible.
Considering the club even provided buses.

This is such a disgrace I almost have to wonder if there was something which kept most of em from attending. Maybe they had a long plane trip or something. It doesn't even make sense why just 4 attended.

Considering the atmosphere on that team and what's been going on for the last year, this really isn't that surprising.

If I was a Redsox fan I would boo every player who didn't attend for the rest of the year.

              We've already started on that.
How weird that Padilla was one of the guys that went...maybe he's a decent guy after all and Teix is the loser?
Boy, you kind of wish they could just have a clean sweep and start over with new guys.

You gotta almost hope there was a logical reason why only four showed up for the sake of the Pesky family. I hope these players don't make up some lame excuses for why they didn't attend either. I was kinda surprised Padilla was one of the guys decent enough to show up too. It almost makes me wonder if these guys are trying to make Valentine look worse. But I wonder if he even showed up.

I wouldn't expect any less from such a classless team.

Where was Beckett? eating chicken of course.

That would not shock me at all.

Next time a Sox immortal dies maybe the family should just have the funeral at a bowling alley and get Rascal Flats to play.

I'm the last person to defend that assylum up in Boston but noticed how the mediots conveniently omitted a little detail, giving readers the impression that it's just some silly bowling party and Yee-Haw fest:

...team turned out for pitcher Josh Beckett [stats]’s annual Beckett Bowl and country music show at Lucky Strike Lanes and the House of Blues.
Apparently it's a benefit for a Children's hospital up there.

Not defending the doofus players, but I remember when Journalism actually existed, and 30 years ago, that little detail gets included -- at least as a footnote.

--So there were two events on the same night, one planned for a long time that players had committed to and one that was obviously planned on much shorter notice. The players honored their commitment to the former and they are bad guyers for doing so?
--Even without the conflicting events how many of the players were likley to have had any kind of relationship with Pesky? He hadn't had a real job with the club for years and he was a half century older than most of the club. How many of us would attend the funeral of a former employee of ours company - who we never worked with or socialized with - no matter who much he had contributed to the company? Would we even be expected to?
