  • Will trout stay in the leadoff spot?

    What do you think?

I would love to see him stay at leadoff. the leadoff guy gets more PAs than any other guy in the lineup and he can get on base and run. so he has tremendous value at this position. At leadoff he can show his spectacular running and maybe become the best leadoff guy ever if he increases his walks a little. he could become a more powerfull version of henderson.

on the other hand he already has some very good power. I could also see him gaining 15 pounds and hit 40 HRs a year. if he does he will probably be even more valuable than as a 25 HR/50 steals leadoff guy although that might cost him a few PAs and his running game. would be sad though for the watchers since his running is so spectacular.

sabermetrically the best position might be even the 2 spot in the lineup. some studies have shown that it would be beneficial to put your best hitter second (you can drive guys in but still get tons of ABs). however I think this is the least likely scenario since few coaches put a good hitter second (stupid to me to put a "bunt em over" type of guy in the spot which gets the second most PAs per season). most likely he will either be 1st or 3/4th.
I now have my own non commercial blog about training for batspeed and power using my training experience in baseball and track and field.

For some reason Trout strikes me as a player who will lose his speed when gets older and gains "15 lbs".

That happens to many players as their bodies fill out in their mid-20s (as I'm sure you're well aware of). I can see him leading off for a few years and if his bat holds up, he'll likely move to the #3 spot in the order. IF he bulks up alot, he'll there's a good chance he'll move to a corner spot in the OF as well.

He can work to make his body stronger in order to hit with more power, but that doesn't have to be at the expense of his running ability.

I agree about keeping in the leadoff spot. The more PA's the better.

Trout has too much power potential not to hit 3rd eventually.

I think more and more managers are starting to put power guys in the leadoff spot. Not all of course, but some. Guy hits for a .300+ avg, 25/30 HRs, might as well give him a the PA's he can get.

Trout loses all his value when hitting in the 3rd spot. The Halos are set for the next 7 years with the best leadoff hitter and one of the best 3rd hitters, in Trout and Pujols. If you change this, it will not look good.

In all likelihood, his speed will probably keep him at the top...however, if he has an injury, he may move down
