  • Congratulations Buster Posey & Fernando Rodney

    Source: rotoworld.com

Major League Baseball has named Buster Posey the National League Comeback Player of the Year.

He was an obvious choice. Posey missed most of 2011 with a broken ankle but returned to bat .336/.408/.549 with 24 homers and 103 RBI this season for the Giants. He's viewed by many as the favorite to also take home NL MVP honors.

Major League Baseball has named Fernando Rodney the American League Comeback Player of the Year.

Rodney didn't post an ERA under 4.24 from 2007-2001, but his 0.60 mark for 2012 broke the record for the lowest ERA in major-league history for a relief pitcher with at least 60 innings pitched. The 35-year-old also won MLB's Delivery Man of Year award.

One can say the same about Posey. i thought the comeback player award was for established guys who were coming back from an injury or bad season, not young guys who have a breakout season, or older guys who were never any good who had a career year.

Im shocked Dunn didn't win it.

Adm Dunn? He had a .204 BA, a .333 OBP, ans struck out 222 times. That's not much of a comeback season.

I heard that this is not the traditional Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year award, given out annually since 1965, but a new one voted on by mlb.com scribes. The Sporting News will also be naming a CPotY.

Breakout season? We're talking about the 2010 Rookie of the Year who caught every inning of every post-season game for the World Series champions that year while batting cleanup. Breakout season?

                  And Adam Dunn?!?

If you compare it to 2011, it was a good season, especially when everyone thought he was done, and was thinking about retiring. He more than doubled his OPS+. I think he fits the 'comeback player' description better than the guys who won it.

It was his second full season, and he did much better than his career norms up til that point. He went from a good player with potential, to an legit MVP candidate.

Isn't that the definition of a 'breakout season'?

He was also ccoming back from a devastating injury that cost him most of 2011.

Eh, I still would have probabaly given the AL Comeback Player of the Year Award to Alex Rios. I know, I know, record-setting ERA, blah blah blah; Rios was just hitting hard line drive after hard line drive after hard line drive this year. I'm saying this, of course, even if Rodney would qualify as a legit comeback player, as he'd only one season previously in his ten year career with an ERA below 3 (2.86; 2005 with Detroit), and two seasons previously with an ERA below 4 (the aforementioned 2005, in addition to a 3.56 in 2006). Of course, ERA is a pretty misleading stat with concerns to relief pitchers, but still.

Trying to justify not giving it to Rodney just looks foolish IMHO. Record setting year and a historical one at that.
