"Trade" talks with the Marlins were probably exaggerated to say the least, but would it be a good idea for the Yankees to deal Alex Rodriguez now, if they have the chance? Derek Jeter will be 39 next June, as he comes back from a serious ankle fracture. Wouldn't it make sense to take this opportunity to move him from shortstop? I mean seriously, a 39-year old shortstop with a gimpy ankle? Take the opportunity to capitalize on the Marlins need for a gate draw to move as much of Rodriguez' contract as you can, while opening up third base for Jeter and giving you the opportunity to get younger at a key infield position. The Yankees are, after all, trying to get younger and lower payroll, so it's a win/win. Sure, A-Rod has a full no-trade, and he's said he intends to be back next year, but that's not really an impediment to a deal. If I'm the Yankees, I do any thing I can to move him now, while you still have a chance.

Right now? No. His trade value couldn't possibly be any lower and the receiving team could really corce the Yankees to eat a huge chunk of his salary. They would be better off hoping he is hitting .280 with a little power on say May 15 next year and move him then. Could save the Yanks millions...

Allen Craig is good, but I would much rather have 2012 Pujols' durability, defense and 80 XBH than Craig.1885 1886 1926 1931 1934 1942 1944 1946 1964 1967 1982 2006 2011

If he is horrible next year as well, then you are in the same position you are now.
Then if he is horrible for a month and a half to open 2013, that makes it harder for a receiving team to imagine that he will ever return to form. And an earlier trade gives the Yankees a little more flexibility and opportunity with the rest of the roster/payroll. They may see this as important for rebuilding media and fan perceptions. It's harder to commit to many new FAs before even knowing what they'll be able to do with A-Rod. They may find image value simply in getting him gone.
Of course most of this calculus would be beyond insane for most teams--but A-Rod's contract was that in the first place.Last edited by Pere; 10-20-2012, 07:46 AM.

Yes, the Yankees should trade him based on his remaining strength.... that of a respectable fielder. His Range Factor at 3B is consistent with his numbers at 3B since he moved to the position. This is the package of skills which the Yankees need to sell to a team in need of better defense at third. The Yankees will have to eat Arod's salary. This is given, but wheeling and dealing is the only way to improve on the situation.Catfish Hunter, RIP. Mark Fidrych, RIP. Skip Caray, RIP. Tony Gwynn, #19, RIP

I think the Yankees really have to ask themselves if they want a 37-year old 3B, clearly on the downside of his career, playing alongside a 39-year old shortstop, who is coming off of a severe ankle injury and already one of the worst defensive SS's in baseball. I know I sure as heck wouldn't. Trade Rodriguez and move Jeter to third. It makes the most sense for New York.Last edited by Rich the Giants fan; 10-20-2012, 12:08 PM.San Francisco Giants, World Series Champions in 2010, 2012, and 2014!!!

Not only do I think they should, I believe they already have - in their minds at least.
An interesting destination could be Miami. I believe he lives there. Maybe somebody like Logan Morrison could be moved. With the Yankees paying 80+% of ARod's salary, they could go out and sign Melky at a discount.

Not a terrible top-5 in a lineup. ARod could play some 1B at times as well."Chuckie doesn't take on 2-0. Chuckie's hackin'." - Chuck Carr two days prior to being released by the Milwaukee Brewers
