  • Should the Yankees trade A-Rod?

"Trade" talks with the Marlins were probably exaggerated to say the least, but would it be a good idea for the Yankees to deal Alex Rodriguez now, if they have the chance? Derek Jeter will be 39 next June, as he comes back from a serious ankle fracture. Wouldn't it make sense to take this opportunity to move him from shortstop? I mean seriously, a 39-year old shortstop with a gimpy ankle? Take the opportunity to capitalize on the Marlins need for a gate draw to move as much of Rodriguez' contract as you can, while opening up third base for Jeter and giving you the opportunity to get younger at a key infield position. The Yankees are, after all, trying to get younger and lower payroll, so it's a win/win. Sure, A-Rod has a full no-trade, and he's said he intends to be back next year, but that's not really an impediment to a deal. If I'm the Yankees, I do any thing I can to move him now, while you still have a chance.

Right now? No. His trade value couldn't possibly be any lower and the receiving team could really corce the Yankees to eat a huge chunk of his salary. They would be better off hoping he is hitting .280 with a little power on say May 15 next year and move him then. Could save the Yanks millions...

If he is horrible next year as well, then you are in the same position you are now.

This is why you don't sign 31 year-old players to huge ten-year contracts, as the Angels will also find out when Pujols hits the wall in a few years.

        Exactly.

Pujols did have fun snorkeling today, or whatever he did...

Pujols is arguably the best player in the MLB i am doubtful he hits the wall as hard as A-Rod ever since he stoped using he has become a less then average player.

Keep in mind that the Angels not only had a better record than the Cardinals, but did so in the game's toughest division. Its not like the Cardinals got better and the Angels got worse when he left, like what happened with A-Rod and the M's.

Allen Craig is good, but I would much rather have 2012 Pujols' durability, defense and 80 XBH than Craig.

A-Rod was the best player in the game when he signed his contract. Pujols was maybe already showing signs of decline.

Well, either way the Yanks are going to eat the majority of his salary. Yes, an apparent return to form could make a difference of millions, but not enough to change that.

Then if he is horrible for a month and a half to open 2013, that makes it harder for a receiving team to imagine that he will ever return to form. And an earlier trade gives the Yankees a little more flexibility and opportunity with the rest of the roster/payroll. They may see this as important for rebuilding media and fan perceptions. It's harder to commit to many new FAs before even knowing what they'll be able to do with A-Rod. They may find image value simply in getting him gone.

Of course most of this calculus would be beyond insane for most teams--but A-Rod's contract was that in the first place.

I think you mean far above average. His OPS+ as a Yankee is 141, and 139 since 2007.

Uh... No reason to keep that in mind as there is no relevancy to this thread. The remark was about WHY you don't sign 31 year olds to contracts the length of A-Rood and Pujols. Do you possibly have me lumped in with the "Pujols is dead to me" crowd? I hope he does well, and sets records. Just not in Interleague play vs us.

Talking about Pujols having fun snorkeling while the Cards are in the PS is pretty common with that mindset. I believe you, however.

Yes, the Yankees should trade him based on his remaining strength.... that of a respectable fielder. His Range Factor at 3B is consistent with his numbers at 3B since he moved to the position. This is the package of skills which the Yankees need to sell to a team in need of better defense at third. The Yankees will have to eat Arod's salary. This is given, but wheeling and dealing is the only way to improve on the situation.

If they have a potential suitor now, you need to think about it, because you might not have one later and then you'd be stuck with the entire contract. I think the Yankees would be wise to divest themselves of as much of his contract as they can, if they can, because they might not get another chance.

I think the Yankees really have to ask themselves if they want a 37-year old 3B, clearly on the downside of his career, playing alongside a 39-year old shortstop, who is coming off of a severe ankle injury and already one of the worst defensive SS's in baseball. I know I sure as heck wouldn't. Trade Rodriguez and move Jeter to third. It makes the most sense for New York.

Not only do I think they should, I believe they already have - in their minds at least.

An interesting destination could be Miami. I believe he lives there. Maybe somebody like Logan Morrison could be moved. With the Yankees paying 80+% of ARod's salary, they could go out and sign Melky at a discount.

                              Stanton
                              ARod

Not a terrible top-5 in a lineup. ARod could play some 1B at times as well.
