  • BBWAA 2012 Award Finalists

John Shea on the BBWAA awards beat . . .

Buster Posey. Of course Buster Posey.

The finalists for all awards produced by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America were announced moments ago, and Posey is among the final five for the National League MVP.

Others in the top five include Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen, Milwaukee’s Ryan Braun, St. Louis’ Yadier Molina and San Diego Chase Headley.

Meantime, Bruce Bochy is among the NL Manager of the Year finalists, along with Davey Johnson and Dusty Baker. Oakland’s Bob Melvin is an AL manager finalist, joining Buck Showalter and Robin Ventura. Remember, the votes were cast before the first game of the playoffs, so Bochy’s postseason work isn’t considered in the process.

Miguel Cabrera and Mike Trout are the top AL MVP candidates. The other finalists are Adrian Beltre, Robinson Cano and Josh Hamilton.

Oakland’s Yoenis Cespedes isn’t an MVP finalist, but he is a rookie finalist. Unfortunately for Cespedes, Mike Trout and Yu Darvish are the competition. The NL rookie race is more of a toss-up: Bryce Harper, Todd Frazier and Wade Miley.

As for Posey, he already won significant hardware — the Willie Mac Award as the Giants’ most inspirational player and the Comeback Player of the Year award, sponsored by The Sporting News, the oldest and most prestigious of the three comeback awards.

(Posey also won comeback honors presented by MLB’s website and the players’ union.)

Awards will be announced next week – MVPs on Monday, managers on Tuesday, Cy Youngs on Wednesday and MVPs on Thursday.

    think he means ROY
