    surprised ...
    1. The more I learn, the more convinced I am that many players are over-rated due to inflated stats from offensive home parks (and eras)

I figured this to be a coin toss between Melvin and Schowalter.

            really?

the a's traded 3 all star pitchers before the season began then lost two main pitchers to injury during the season

and won 94 games and had the best record in baseball the last 90 games and won a division overcoming a huge deficit?

            hard to argue against that

Yep, that's pretty much a coin toss.

I disagree with it as well. Showalter should have won. The Orioles were performing the whole season and were in the AL East most of the time even when the Yankees went on a 10 game winning streak, the O's managed to stay close to the Yankees.

The A's on the other hand were underperforming for most of the 1st half and turned it on in the 2nd half.

Shocked. Melvin did a great job but Buck did an amazing job to get that team to the playoffs whether it was luck or great managing or likely some of both.

Either one would have been worthy choices.

Showalter got robbed IMO. We're talking about a team that hadn't played meaningful baseball since 1997! That's 15 years ago. He changed around the entire culture of that franchise in a couple short years.

The A's on the other hand, we all know are a result of Billy Beane's genius. We've all learned from Moneyball just how little control the manager is given in Oakland.

                      4. Ted Williams
                      5. Willie Mays
                      6. Alex Rodriguez
                      7. Hank Aaron
                      8. Honus Wagner
                      9. Lou Gehrig
                      10. Mickey Mantle

Good point and you cant go wrong with either one but honestly if I was a voter I woulda gone Melvin. I think the Orioles played in a league where the Yankees got to old and the Redsox were riddled with injuries. Melvin did a great job with what little he had in a very competitive AL West.
